I swear I saw something on here about using vaseline to prevent air/dust from leaking around the edges of the air-filter. I tried searching and couldn't find anything.

Am I imagining things? Is this something that people do?

If not, what can I do about dust getting around the edges of the air filter?

Having used to worry about that, it really is not that huge a problem.

What saw? Are you getting wear on the skirt and jug from ingesting dust?

I come to the conclusion that the real fine stuff will try to get in when the filter is a little plugged and just try to run cleaner filters.

Vaseline

I have used it for fishing reel grease and other uses, still have a a jar,
KY jelly may have a use too.

I tried on my 460 to seal teh filter better. didn't work. The saw ate dirt anyways. I had to take some threads off the bolt that teh cover screws down onto

MS170

No noticeable wear (that I can tell) but the inside of the airbox/carb/intake port was literally covered in dust when I took the carb off to replace with a WT215 (doing a muffler mod and in the future possibly a little porting in). I get the feeling that it ingested more than "just a little dust".

Is this something I just shouldn't worry about?

For the Stihl guys, this in a heavy duty KN filter but notice the foam tape on the inside of the filter cover, this spaces out the cover giving better sealing the system, and can be done on 440,460,660,880 type filters.

are ya sure? The 170 looks backwards...the side that looks like clean filtered is the dirty side. Or at least thats how I remember it from when I had one.

regarless, that filter just seals with a ridge of plastic that clamps down the filter right? You should be able to put a bead of rtv sealant to thicken the contact surface. I'm thinkin the sealant would stick to the filter and be semi permanent. Or maybe just a new filter. Might be too squished down and too compressed to seal anymore

Yeah, it does seem backwards. The air passes up through the airbox and filter then turns around and goes back down through the air inlet and into the carb. It was dirty on the top side of the filter around the edges and the inside of the carb was pretty dirty.

I might just stop by the dealer and get a new filter today.

its a habit ive pulled from dirtbiking, running a smear of grease around the airboot, might do nothing but it sure cant hurt..

+1. Vaseline melts. A smear of bearing grease has stopped all "dust eating" on my 460s.

I'm using mine dry now with no trouble. I filed down the stud that the cover screws on to and filed the edge of that alum piece to keep the seal edge of the filter away from it. So far no problems.

Like said earlier in the thread: i also give the sealing point on the air-filter a bit of grease, worked on MX bikes, an seem to work on my Partner p543.

Done for years with dirt bikes as well....in almost 40 years of riding and racing only had one funny incident where a wad of that grease somehow got sucked in the little intake to the fine idle adjustment or "air screw" and frustrated me for a ride until I figured it out. (Symptom like I needed to change pilot jets but...all it needed was a little compressed air)
