Hi Guys,

Just came across my dad's saw that we used to cut firewood when I was many moons younger. The tag is stainless and the serial # is 001731. Does this make it a 1980 saw? It has the metal anti kickback bar.

I got it running but I need to find out why there is no oil getting to the bar.

Thanks

1980 sounds right for year of saw. If I remember correctly the serial tags switched to black in 1987. I have a 1988 44 husky with black tag and serial # has 7 digits and starts with an 8. It has the orange plastic brake handle and gray top. This saw really puts the bar oil out. On your 44 if you can't see anything plugged on the outside at bar mount, you could try flushing the oil tank out with some fuel mix and/or running some bar oil thinned with fuel through it.

Good luck and welcome to site. :)

Hey Gizz, Just Curious, how does your ol' Husky 44 compare to your Husky 346 NE?

I am not sure that number can be dated at all - one digit is missing, from how I thought a 1980 number would be. I could be wrong though......

Also, I am not sure when Husky adopted the "datable" system, but believe it was about 1980. They started making the 44 before that.

I agree that dating may not be possible as I was also expecting seven digits. You know your stuff on this and I trust your input.

The 44 is smaller, but heavier than the 346XP NE. I like the size of it a lot (it is very compact). The saw doesn't have the air injection, but filter still stays clean for a long time. It starts quick and oils very well, but doesn't have the high rpm's of the 346. The 44 is a real nice small size firewood saw with very good torque. I primarily grab the 44 for chores at home and for use at the firewood pile. Grab the 346 and 385 for work.

Here is a pic of the tag. So,...would 6 digits make it a 1979 which I guess is the first year it was made?

I got the oil flowing by pulling the pump and cleaning out all the crap. Works fine now.

Thanks for all the input.

Sawtroll may comment again. I think acres saw collectors site lists 1979 as the first year. I'm no expert on figuring out the manufacture date...just using info I collect from the guys here.

The oldest IPL I can find is dated 1978-12, so the first "official" year probably was 1979, as Acres say. It isn't definate evidence though!

Thanks for all the input.

Could as well be late 1978, 1980 or 1981 as far as I know - all it tells me is that it is an older one, made before the datable system was adopted by Husky - as I said, I don't know exactly when that was.
