Poulan 245A

My buddy sold me this today. Payed a little more than I wanted to, but I guess its not bad for a 74cc saw. It fires but then floods out. Figured that the carb needs a good kit. Also needs the clutch/ sprocket bearing freed + a few more fasteners that are missing. But it surprised me when I opened up the air cover and seen that it takes the same carb that any SXL takes. I got a few of those extra carbs laying around that I cleaned so this should be a easy fast fix. Electronic ignition is also another thing that I like about this...but the thing that gets me is that it looks super familiar to a McCulloch 10-10 except that the 10-10 has a different (normal) recoil housing. I heard that you can use a McCulloch 10 series bar on it since it only takes the .325 chain. Would like to slap a little 16in bar on this and watch those chips fly.

245A was my first saw, bough new in 1977. Great old saw!!!

The 245A is a great older saw. I'm not aware that .325 chain was ever an option on these. 7 tooth sprocket with 3/8" chain, with either sprocket nose bars, or solid hard tip bars. With the right setup, bow bars also. I use a 24" sprocket nose on mine. I mostly just run it at GTG's or once in awhile just for the heck of it. Super running saw!

Parts are getting hard to come by, so I hate to use it a lot as work saw. But do on rare occasion.:msp_biggrin:

.325 pitch Barracuda chain was used on some PowerSharp versions of these saws. Would have a .325-9 rim. A swap to regular 3/8" chain would be the way to go.

I seen your video of that sucker today and I was drooling over it . I could not believe how fast it cut especially with a 24" bar. Makes me really want to get that thing running and get a B&C for it asap. But anyways I understand you not wanting to use that a lot...beautiful saw. What are you cutting with full chisel?

I just switched mine from .325 9 tooth to 3/8 with a brand new powermatch, and it sure does cut. it already cut well, but the bar was worn out. Not bad for a free saw. I plan on using it a lot.
