Stihl 064! What is it

I have 2 064,s. One I have had since late 1990,s. Bought it new at my local stihl shop here in North Idaho, used mostly in big cedar. About a month ago I picked up another 064 with piston problems, rebuilt it now runs great after muffler mod, my older 064 had factory dual port muffler. My question is why such a difference in the 2 saws. The cases, tank, top cover, air filter cover are completely different. I tried my saw shop, which has changed hands, and they have no idea what I have even though both saws are clearly labeled stihl 064. I contacted Stihl corp. by email and I was told there was only one run of 064, one saw must be something different. Sure but what is it? I gave them serial numbers to no avail, so maybe someone on here can help. The original number is +14474850/ . My " new saw" is .133345630 . You guys are great at solving questions so maybe you can help. I've taken enough space thanks Chris

There are early and late 064's. The early ones had metal filter covers that were shaped differently that were metal and the filters were different. No dual port mufflers that I know of. Maybe somebody put an 066 top end on that one. The factory 066 dual port muffler cover won't fit an 064 muffler, the bottom of the muffler is different.

AFAIK, the case and tank is the same on all 064s. There were two different style air filters and covers, but that's about it.

My original 064 has a plastic hd air filter cover, that will interchange with my 046, the cases look like the 046, BUT when I bought the saw new I saw it come out of a new stihl box at the dealer. To go further the first 064 has a plastic flywheel and a 2 screw coil, my second 064 has a 3 screw dog leg coil. My second saw has a 52 mm piston as I just replaced it. I have a real brain fart I am going to some how measure stroke of my first saw and get back to you

AFAIK, the 064 never had a poly flywheel and always had a 52mm bore. Sounds to me like you have a 046 and a 064.

AFAIK, the case and tank is the same on all 064s. There were two different style air filters and covers, but that's about it.

The metal filter cover was for the Euro and Asian saws as well as the Arctic saws. The HD filter option was for the "Western" models as per the dealer support manual from 1993.

Well I measured the stroke on my "64" and found it to be 36mm about the same as a 46, so that solves that problem, no 64. Ran in to my old retired stihl dealer at coffee this morning, yes at one time in this area you could make a living selling saws and retire, he remembers the saw he still believes he sold me a 064. The facts are clear here. You do not have two 064s. The 064 never had a poly flywheel, and all 064s share the same case and tank, all be it some are clear. What model plate is on it does not matter.
