What is the current ranges of price on 084's? I am not much of a Stihl guy but going to look at a saw tomorrow and the owner has one. Looks to be in average condition with a 36" bar. Realize this is subjective, but looking to narrow the spectrum. $300? $400? $500? More?

Funny you asked that question, I bought 1 tonite for 500.00 bucks! Better then average shape

There's been a couple nice perfect runner ones ready to use around here in the last couple years in the $750 range.

Stihl 084 is a modern 121cc chainsaw ideal for milling and/or taking down 5ft+ DBA trunks.

if you can purchase ANY 121cc sized chainsaw in good running condition for under $500 .. that's a deal!

I gave $600 for PHO, about 2 years ago for a well running gone through/checked out saw off the boards. Its my understanding that the clutch side bearing could be an issue if not taken care of (in other words beat on). I would check very carefully parts can get expensive very quickly, new jugs are about $340 if I remember right Stihl only and mufflers are basiclly made out of unobtainium. Sure there are guys out there with parts unless they are your good friend that aint comming off of anything. I have been looking around ebay and such a complete usable case start around $200, damage repairable less but still kinda hard to find. Great saws for running 40"+ bars but heavy. All im saying are parts are getting harder to come by and only going up.

Lot of Variables Here

Lot of variables involved, as usual. Running condition, hours of use, compression, housing appearance, etc. If running, they can range from $450 to $900. As a non-running parts saw, I have seen them sold on E-bay for as high as $300. Parts for these saws are expensive and hard to find because of its age. Cylinders are non-existent, but the 088 rings and piston will fit it.

Note that bar and chain have little to do with the selling price because most loggers that buy these big saws have their own. They would rather save on the shipping cost by not paying for the bar and chain. Perhaps the best application of the 084 is a logging saw that bucks all day. Even the loggers would rather fell the tree with a lighter saw such as the MS 660 that weighs almost 8 lb less dry.

What did the owner have to say? Update?

It took me a minute to recall the details of this saw. The owner runs a small engine repair business out of his garage and had advertised several saws for sale including 4 Stihls. In addition to the 084 he also had two 192's and a 280, all needing some work. The 084 looked well used and the oiler no longer worked, I believe he was asking 5 bills. I ended up passing on all the Stihls and bought a John Deere 60 from him. As mentioned, it is a heavy saw and I thought my money could be better spent elsewhere.

However, I do appreciate the interest and responses.

So I dont hear from the PO today, he lives about 20 miles away up near the ski hill.
So it a nice day for a bike ride, so I go up, but he is not home, got held up on the way as someone has take out a large power pole on a corner and gone down a 80ft bank.
Cops are the as are the utilities
So I call about 7pm tonight, his wife answers, she has the muffler!!!! :D
Sad news he is the one who took the pole out, four broken ribs, one over the heart, three broken vertebrae and a stick in the head, he was ejected from the truck.
She says he will be fine after a while!!!!
Sorry about the hijack!!

There was one on SF CL last week for $225. I told the guy I would take it and be there in a couple of hours. He called back and said that the saw was no longer for sale. It was missing the air cleaner, but susposedly ran fine.

I missed one on ebay today that needed carb work, oiler didn't work and only had 125 psi the winning bid was 410. I would say a good one is still in the 600 dollar range.

I was watching that one too. Compression said to be 125.

Glad you checked up on it. If it "supposedly" ran fine, it probably did and without the air cleaner. Sounds like he was offering a fish hook rather than an ad to sell a saw. All he wanted to know was whether his saw was worth any money. I hate trash ads like that. Once a saw is advertised for sale, it should be sold if the buyer meets the price. :msp_mad:
