Brigs vanguard 16 with HOT muffler...
...like glowing red hot!!!!!! Motor is on a chipper I just picked up. Previous owner couldn't get it to run. After an oil/filter change, charged battery, fresh gas, and a light squirt of starting fluid she fired right up but a bit rough. I let it run with some sea foam in the gas for about a half hour just to clean things out and see if there was any improvement. Smoothed out after about ten minutes. Actually used it tonight after dark on one test branch and the muffler was glowing red. Not a normal condition but no idea where to go for remedies. Running lean due to partially blocked carb? Starts fine and didn't miss a beat with the test limbs I put through it.

In my experience, alot of those small motors have extremely hot mufflers. I dont know why though. I took the skin off my left hand once cause I accidentally brushed my left hand against the muffler on the Honda motor on my log splitter. It was a lil nasty.
I dont know why, but those lil motors seem to run real hot. Might make a great thesis paper for someone. good luck. T

Maybe i just freaked a little seeing it glowing red.
I try not to do anything after dark just for safety reasons but I was really itching to play with the new toy!!!! Used it today for about two hours in the daylight. It started and ran like a champ. Coulnd't tell if it was glowing so out of sight out of mind!

Like Tree said, tilling in the dark (days aren't long enough) small engine mufflers light up. See it more on old engines where the muffler is rusted thin.

For emissions they retard the timing a fair amount on the new smaller engines. Retarded timing equals Higher Exhaust temps. Just to be sure the timing is where is should be by checking to see if the flywheel keyway has sheared and the flywheel has not slipped.
