I'm going for European black alder Betulaceae Alnus glutinosa.

I'd like to say that I knew this on on sight, but I had to key it out for this guess.

Notice the similarity of the green fruit (your pic) and the mature fruit on my reference, along with the matching description in the text.

You could be "the man". You are probably right. Good job, pdqdl!

Thank you, sir.

I have noticed that you do an admirable job of putting an ID on those west coast trees that I never heard of; so your comments are appreciated even more.

I don't think I have ever seen one of those black alders, but the source indicates that they are found all across the country. Hmmm... I'll have to start looking for that one, now that I know what it looks like.

Is this growing on a wet or swampy site? I think it may be Alnus rugosa, Speckled Alder. The parts you show on the right are the male flower, female flowers are catkins.

That is a much more northern variety, and the leaves don't seem to match nearly as well.

You seem to have it backwards. The catkin is typically considered "male", whereas the fruit is "female". Given that the catkin throws its germinal product into the wind in the hopes of impregnating some flower somewhere, giving rise to progeny of the plant...somehow this seems like the way we should keep it.

Yup, and the way it shall be.
