I'm going for European black alder Betulaceae Alnus glutinosa.
I'd like to say that I knew this on on sight, but I had to key it out for this guess. http://www.cnr.vt.edu/DENDRO/DENDROL...eet.cfm?ID=157 Notice the similarity of the green fruit (your pic) and the mature fruit on my reference, along with the matching description in the text.

Thank you, sir.
I have noticed that you do an admirable job of putting an ID on those west coast trees that I never heard of; so your comments are appreciated even more. I don't think I have ever seen one of those black alders, but the source indicates that they are found all across the country. Hmmm... I'll have to start looking for that one, now that I know what it looks like.

That is a much more northern variety, and the leaves don't seem to match nearly as well.
http://www.fw.vt.edu/dendro/dendrolo...eet.cfm?ID=370 You seem to have it backwards. The catkin is typically considered "male", whereas the fruit is "female". Given that the catkin throws its germinal product into the wind in the hopes of impregnating some flower somewhere, giving rise to progeny of the plant...somehow this seems like the way we should keep it.
