storage boxes

Just looking for some ideas for storage/travel boxes for my saw. Or does everyone just use the plastic ones. Saw a picture of a guys box that was made out of wood that had storage for extra chains, bars, tools, oil, and even a little fuel can. Any pictures would be great thanks.

Give us more information.... Are these saws that are being used or shelf queens that are being transported to shows? How many saws and what size? Does the box have to be easily movable or is it going to sit in the back of a truck?

You may try posting over in the firewood forum as those folks will probably have some ideas.

Im looking for ideas on what do you guys use. Do you just use the plastic box, throw it in your tool box in your truck? There are no requirements it was a question that I had since it seems that alot of you guys on here cut wood for a living. 1 saw is what I have but might be getting more.

I've got my 2 main wood saws (7300 & 420), chainsaw bag with tools, chaps, spare chains, wedges, earplugs, first aid kit, etc; helmet, gas and oil, splitting axe, pair of wood hooks, and my rope bag with 150' of Amsteel Blue, a couple tree straps, and a pulley. It takes some grunt for 1 person to lift it, but it has almost everything I need (except a cant hook - behind the truck seat), and can be in the back of the truck, on the trailer, or in the tractor bucket in no time and ready to go. I really like having everything in one place for times like this when ya don't have all day to round up all your gear.

Uh....

Just find a container that will accommodate the size of your saw / saws.

What do "we" use....?? Some type of box or containers - what are they made of....?? Plastic, wood, metal, recycled paper / cardboard. Those are usually pretty common when it comes to building materials in our lifestyles today and lot's of boxes and containers are made out of those materials each and every day. I suggest using something as such to store your 1 saw in and if you end up buying more saws in the future the same properly sized containers / boxes will do the task just as well as they will for your 1 saw.

Are ya shure ya broght enuff saws??? I mean one would hate to be stranded without a working saw. Ya better throw one more in there just to be on the safe side.

You could always use an old ice chest. Like, one dollar or less for broken ones at yard sales. It doesn't look like a "toolbox" screaming "steal me" in the back of your truck.

I have two that ride in my truck. When we go shopping, one gets filled with frozen cheap meat from the slaughterhouse, that I feed my dogs with, the other is for our groceries, such of them as we buy.

As to thirsty friends..for real, I do not have any friends in "real life" who drink, and I quit in 93, got to the point I liked bavarian breakfast juice just a little bit too much...so I quit. Of course, I don't hang out with many people either. Mostly stay on the farm, the critters are my friends. I get my "talk to hoomann beenz" fix by typing on the net.

I am not a recluse or anti social, just every time I turn the key and leave the driveway it costs folding money, of which I have very little, so mostly I don't go anywhere except for actual necessities. And most of the people I know do farm work, which means seven days a week around 12 hour days, so there just ain't a lot of energy left over for socializing. I don't work that many hours a day, my back won't let me so I am part time working retired now, but I do work seven days a week.

Anyway, I still think an old used ice cooler chest has potential as a good "stealth" tool box/ chainsaw hauler.

Don't think any disrespect was meant by the "thirsty friends" comment. Lots of us think a days worth of cuttin IS a social event...and wouldn't miss it. And the rest of us do it for a living. For me its a good day to slather up in some saw chips roll around in some bar oil and through some 2 cycle screams in for good measure...

My point was that there are people who would rather steal a cooler than a box of tools because whatever they get is going to buying booze anyway.

OK my first brand bashing quote.............I could only see one Husky in the picture at least he had one that would work!

Just Kidding..........some of them Homelites and Macs are the cream of the crop!

I can leave the keys in my truck and everything I own in the bed of it, they will take the cooler first.................as most know I am always thirsty!

Oh I know he was joking, but I wasn't! I really don't have any thirsty friends, short of most of you guys! HAHAHAHAHA! And I haven't cut with anyone else since...since... whoa doggies dang0rama, decades now, way way back when I helped some friends with their firewood biz.. Sometimes my GF will come with me and throw small chunks in the box when I go cutting, but not too often. Well, one exception but only for one cut, the day we used the excavator to pull the red oak half a tree outta the house. I did all the trim work needed by myself, then the boss and one guy came over, I cut one more big one outta the way, that's it for working with a saw with other people around though.

Ya, sounds like fun to go cutting with some buds, just never happens here, my job, I work by myself.

Funny, but I never missed it, brewski, just decided one day enough was enough, I had consumed my tanker car full over the years, and the intake level was slowly accelerating, so... quit. I did ask mr. big shot in the sky for help..worked..never missed it, lost my taste for it just about instantly. Kinda cool really. For what it is worth, that's what happened. I don't care at all what other folks do, I ain't a tee totaler nazi about it or judgmental, and for sure I was mr. "party down" for some years there, just I don't now and thinking about I don't have any buds who drink any.

I think...me posting this...hmm..I ain't shy none but maybe if just one guy reads this who is thinking about it and it might help them out..maybe it is worth it. Offtopic and so on, but maybe.....lot of folks got no probs and can social drink all their lives, but we'd all be naive to think that is universal, a lot of folks it can turn into a problem, it did with me, and well, problem solved, it's possible. I just took the opportunity that got presented to me and wrote a little on it. The humor in the original reply to me is there, we all "got it", I "got it", I just wanted to expound a little on the subject.

Just because. I like writing, my first response about the ice chest as a saw box was a legit on topic response, and the other..lot of folks read here, ya never know....

Welcome to A.S.!

Several threads on this that you can search for and see other answers, photos, etc.

Wood boxes get heavy quickly, but can be pretty durable and double as a seat. Plastic boxes, old coolers like zogger suggests, or even Rubbermaid storage boxes are lighter, cheap (if they don't say 'STIHL' or 'Husqvarna' on the side), keep the oil off of your floor, and clean up easy. If you pack a lot of stuff in them, they get heavy fast too. Cut a slot for the bar and slide a bar cover over the exposed chain. Or you can buy factory cases for about $40 each.

Part of the question is 'how often are you going to carry them?'. 'Storage boxes' sound like they stay in the garage or truck - they can be big and heavy and lock, etc. Build them out of plywood. 'Travel boxes' sound like you will carry them back and forth between the garage and the truck or worksite, etc. These should be lighter.

If you look around this site you will see guys that have (ahem) more than one saw - they won't all fit into one case, and they all need the same tools, fuel, etc. So one thing to think about is a separate case for each saw, with room for maybe a spare chain or 2. Then have a separate box for chainsaw tools, common parts (bar nuts, rim sprockets, spark plugs, etc.) that maybe you want to take with you, but do not need to carry all the way into the woods.

Bottom line is whatever works for you and the way you use your saw(s).

Every ones situation is different but you'll soon recognize what's required for your needs.

Most of my cutting is done close to home so my saw rides on the back of the bike in an open plastic tote along with the necessities, so no protection required.








To go to the hunting cabin there's a fair bit of labour involved getting in there and repeatedly handling the cargo. Firstly it's river travel, thru 4 sets of rapids and a couple portages, then an ATV trail. When we go I take the 7900 to ensure we can cut anything fallen across our trails. The box is fitted to protect and hold the saw securely and take any bumps along the way. I've tried to make it as compact as possible and still be able to carry all the extras.

zogger you are a man after my own heart 57 yrs old and about the same spot in my life .I too did about the same thing ,asked the good lord to take the taste from me.Never really had a big problem just became a habit.I did soak up my battleship too. Don't have the free cash or the desire to waste it anymore. It's all good though I enjoy my life ,get to fish a little ,enjoy grandkids oh and I use a medium sized plastic toolbox for saws ,holds about 4 and a couple of large rubbermaid containers for ppe, ropes,climbing gear. Metal ammo boxes for extra chains.

I use a "rubbermaid" type box with very square sides, things seems to fit better. One of the biggest things I look for is WHETHER IT SHEDS RAIN. That's huge for me.

I stick one of these oil soak pads that you find in a spill kit in the bottom
