so there i am trolling kijiji when all of a sudden a titan 57 jumps out of the screen at me.
way back in '92-93 and '94 i worked at bentons small engines. we sold a ton of these, and had a ton come back within a month or so. all had the same problem, fuel and impulse lines. they would be totaly ruined due to the owner NOT reading the manual (or listening to the dealer) and using ethanol blended fuel and the fact that mcculloch italy used (for lack of a better term) p.o.s. line right from the get go. the line inside the tank would be perfectly fine. however, the line between the tank/handle assembly and engine would basicly crumble to dust. why didn't they use the same dammed line everywhere? never got an answer to that. ever. we would use windshield wiper line to fix them and off they went to never be seen again. some needed a top end after the owner decided to try to get just one more hunk of wood cut up even though the saw would just scream and die and bog, but that one piece of wood just needed to be cut gawd all be it! and they would be pi$$d when they were told that was abuse by the book of mcculloch and they would have to pay for the top piston/cylinder and labour to get the saw up and running again. some were left to rot....
AAAAAAANY WAY. heres the saw i bought: i loved the titans. i crack jokes and ridicule them, but i do think they were a good saw. too bad mcculloch didn't truly see the potential in them.

the complete saws piston has a good gouge on the exhaust side but i have 2 other topends. probably from the fuel lines saying bye bye. it's the same damage i have seen many times. the cylinder if perfectly fine.
basicly almost 2 complete saws plus an extra crank case and various parts.
i didn't feel to bad paying out fiddy bucks for the lot. didn't even bother to ####er with the man. in my mind it was a good deal anyway. i'll have no problem with parts as i have pretty much all the parts to build a few saws from nos parts john still has. it'll be up and running the next weekend i have off. can't hardly wait!
VROOOOOOM! VROOOOOM! VROOOOOOOOOOM!

Hey, I'll give you Fiddy Bucks for either the Solo or Stihl you have posted in your Advert. .........

Steve

HI STEVE!

:jester:that solo 694 i bought new last year. paid 980 out the door. it was the second 694 i bought from them in 2 weeks:msp_biggrin: been using the first for milling and will never go back to a stihl. sold the second one last spring after using it for a bunch of swamp clearing of elm oak and walnut. i don't care who you are, what you like or your personal opinion on saws, that solo 694 is a far better saw than the 3 660's i've owned. far more torque in the cut. the extra weight means nothing. it miniscule anyway. far better antivibe as well.
if you have a chance to get your hands on either a dolmar 9010 or solo 694, do it. after opening the muffler, on the second, it was a total different animal.
that stihl 044 i sold about 2 weeks earlier:bang: should have kept it. i did get a good price for it.

:cool2: ahhhhhh. i still remember how they looked when you would open up the box and lift it out of the cardboard bracing:heart:
i do remember they were set up really well from the factory. you didn't have to play with the jets to get them running properly.
i have no idea who's idea it was to run a 24" bar/chain on them either. i always found 18" to be the biggest they liked. and thats how we ordered them. they were a good price, about $380+tax. the pm700 were about $450+tax at the time.
this one i bought has the 24" on it. that'll be changed out after i get it to run.

Hi BB,

With all these extra parts, you wouldn't have an extra switch module for a 57?

I've nearly got my 57 re lined. But I can't see or understand I guess, where the fuel impulse line goes. The IPL is confusing. It has one item marked "fuel/oil vent" I doubt you would vent both through one vent. The very short line on the right side that runs across the saw is the oil vent but on the IPL it shows it in a different location?

Confused

I'm still trying to figure out the history of these things. I'm seeing now they were manufactured in Italy - were they also an Italian design?

After seeing that domed piston it reminds me of my olympyk 950 piston.....they look identical. Who makes the jugs for mac? Is it gilardoni? I still think them titans (italian macs) were made by oleo mac/olympyk but i asked this a while back and was told NO....not the same....Anyone else with more knowledge care to shine in?

Good questions and I'm not the one to answer them as I have also had those same questions.

It says the McCulloch factory in Italy? Really, McCulloch spent enought to build or buy a factory there? This at the time they were stuggling here to come up with a new design for saws?

I know nothing about these Italian Macs but from what I see and from the time frame listed for them it seems odd.

This saw the OP is talking about was introduced after the 605-610 jokes and should have sold well being almost 4lbs lighter and much more modern.

Anyone else on that McCulloch italy v.s oleo mac/olympyk saw connection......who makes the cylinders? oleomac/olympyk used exclusively Guilardoni i do believe.
