i have some spots of rust on mine, i sprayed it with cooking oil and wiped it down. its on the lower level and is a little damp down there.

Last year I had some rust in my owb, so this year after I cleaned it out real good I oiled the inside of it down

thought about doing that (have an OWB) but instead decided to not give it an off season, so pushing 13 years of 24/7 firing, with 1/2 day shutdown each fall for annual cleaning.

Why do you heat 24/6 in the summer? My brother's inlaws just run theirs every 3 or 4 days for hot water.

I scrape my OWB as well as I can when I shut it down then go in there with a big can of WD40. Im only on my 3rd year but it seems to be working.

We do. Always have.

I live in N. ga. And I'm from Texas. We usually(not always) pull it out of the house in spring. Store it til it gets cold and pull it back out. Fire it up in the barn or somewhere covered.

Put enough pipe on her to get a draft going, light it up super hot and brush Crisco or Refined Coconut oil on.

Let her cool, maybe do it again later but she sure looks good in the house in winter. I'll post pics tamale.

WD40 is a real BAD product when trying to prevent rust over extended periods.

Water based, ain't it?
I am not sure if WD-40 is water based or not but in my opinion it's not a very good product. It's next to worthless as a penetrating oil. It's a better cleaner than a lubricant but not stellar by any means. It's a good example of extensive marketing.

I got a buddy who's an electrical engineer/mathematical genius. He HATES it. "HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO LUBRICATE AND PENETRATE AT THE SAME DAMN TIME?"

Five people in the house here and we go through a lot of hot water daily, so it's just easier to keep the fire going steady instead of building one every other day or so - only fire up once per 24 hour period in the summer using junk wood off the forest floor that would otherwise rot. I ain't makin' any friends at the local propane distributor, but that's a problem I can live with.
