Holy schnikes! I actually had an idea that worked perfectly!
No matter how slow and careful I was, I would always throw up ash when unloading a conventional fireplace shovel into a bucket while sitting indian style in front of the woodstove. Even if I put the shovel into the bucket (which was on maybe a 30 degree angle) and just slid it out from under the ash.
$10 grain scoop from Tractor Supply, threaded bar I had in my spare parts pile in the garage, buck worth of nuts and lockwashers:
Left the bucket outside, well away from the door. Took all of four scoops to completely clean the stove -- maybe a couple minutes instead of ten minutes the old way. Being outside, I could just dump it quickly and go to get another load. Almost no ash drifted away in the house!
