I have a chance to get a 266 crankcase for kinda cheap. Its just the case, crank, oiler, flywheel, clutch and 2 piece coil. Can this be made into 272 as I see more parts available new and used.

decableguy: It might be a while, but I bought about 5 266es in various states. Some are more or less just crankcase, others more complete. I'm new to engine repair and trying to figure out how to get at least one going, but after that I might have some extra parts. All of them have cylinders, and I think all have ignition modules, coils, clutch assemblies. I think

I do know that if you had a complete 266xp you could in fact bolt a 272xp top end onto it but you would also need the complete 272xp intake and carb system. I believe all of the 266 saws used the two piece ignition system and all the 262xp saws used a one piece system, you can not mix and match the flywheels and/or coils. You also can not convert a two piece ignition saw to a one piece because of how the block is made. The fuel tank and all of the covers are the same, though you may have to use a 272 top cover to clear the 272 intake. I believe the early 266 had the idle adjust screw made into the block and the later version had it located on the carb like the 272, this could possibly cause a issue but I can not say for sure.

some 266s' had a one piece ignition I believe. You want a decent carb, the HS224 that was on later 266s' might be fine. Inlet block is different (266 the isolation block bolts to the cylinder and the carb bolts to the iso block, 272 carb bolts through iso block all the way into cylinder). I've heard both ways whether you need to mod the top cowl or not.

add it up, aftermarket:

brake cover $50
Carb $50
Bar/Chain $70
Iso Block $10
Cowling $30
Seals $20
Piston and Jug $120
Dogs, gaskets, misc.

Give or take. Does it have it's coils? Unless you've got misc parts around, or access to them (some folks can help here) - it's kind of a losing proposition - plus all that work and the unknown quality of the block you have.

99% correct. And the 266's do all have the twin coil set up. The single coil set up arrived with the 268XP

Top covers will not interchange between the twin and single coil saws because the left/front cover bolt locations are about a half inch apart.

You could get away with the original top cover with this project by using the 61's filter and filter holder.

The fit between the top cover and the muffler can be an issue if you use the taller/newer muffler with the older cover. Not a big deal, but the top will contact the muffler and melt a little bit.

Hello I plan on doing this also to my 266se as it has just for some reason lost its compression. I was out cutting some limbs off and had a little kick back and it just died. Once I opened it up I noticed some metal fragments in the piston chamber I saw it from the carb opening. So I have ordered a 272 cylinder and pistion kit from an online store. They seem to be alright but it was cheap so I am not sure what to expect. I also ordered the carb for the 272 and I noticed you guys were mentioning something about a carb adapter? I could get this but do I need it or will the one that the 266 had bolted to the cylinder work? I had one more question as well but I ordered the 272 because I could not find any information about this but would the 288 c/p kit work on my saw? I figure they are really close in size but I was never able to compare the two.

You will need 272 intake block. 266 will not work-different shape and size. If your 266se is later model and has the 20mm outlet bore (Tillotson 224) it will work with the 272 cylinder. If not,you will need a 272 carb. Earlier 266se used a 18mm carb, same as the 61. Use the 266 air filter and filter holder. The bolts will need to changed. The longer 272 bolts go all the way to cylinder and 266 bolts go to the intake block only.

A 288 will definitely not work.

Thanks for the link to the site. I am forced to order all my parts online as there are no chainsaw dealers in my area and the closest is roughly 4 hours away. Do you think I will require the new top part for the upgrade or will the original one be sufficient?

If you are buying it to sell after you get it rebuilt, then don't waist your time. If you are buyin it to eventually get back together after months of daily notices of 272,266 parts from ebay to finally get a deal on something you need, then go for it. I have put very little money in some saws and made good money and I have also bought smokin deals and went in the whole. IMHO I would not rebuild one from a crankcase and the other things you said was on it if someone gave it to me. I have only rebuilt a few but I have had bad luck buying used parts. Just not for me. Best of luck in whatever you decide!

No I am not looking for used parts, this is my saw and not for sale. I originally bought it for me and then wanted bigger. So it is a 266SE and i have bought all new parts for it including the 272xp p/c kit. Just wanted to know if I should also purchase the cover or not as I am not sure if the 266 will fit?

Sorry bout that man. I should have quoted the original poster decableguy2000. His question is what I gave my opinion about.

I mostly buy ebay used parts and don't have problems. I've redone numerous 266's and 272's with used parts. 272 top cover will not fit,you need to keep the 266 cover. You cannot use the 272 air filter-it won't fit under the cover.

i'm in the same boat as the OP(thinking of upgrading my 266sg to a 272 p/c), it's got a tillotson 163 A carb, will it do the job or will it need to be upgraded to a tillotson 224?

You need the larger carb, to get 272xp performance, as far as I know.
