Thanks for posting the pictures Jerry, posting pics on my old machine and slow dial up is not a option for now.
I acquired this saw from a auction buddy, when he can pickup a saw cheap he drops it off to me. He stopped by three weeks ago and asked me if I wanted a $5.00 saw. I said lets look at it and this what he had and I said yes I will take it. This guy has owed me a mower repair bill for three years ($150) and this is the first saw of any value he has brought me. I figured even if the top end was toast I had parts to fix it.
A couple a weeks ago I decided to check it out and clean it up. I knew it didn't have fire, compression was 120 and the p/c looked good. Removed the covers and cleaned the years of accumulated grime off, removed and cleaned the points. Reassembled the saw, had spark, added fresh gas and fired it up. The saw could use a set of rings, but it pulls pretty hard with 120 pounds of comp, so I'm going to leave it as is for now. This saw will go in my GTG line up with the rest of my gear drives.

That is a neat saw! I like it. Should be fun to see how it runs at the fall GTG

Great score Jim. Very interesting. A 'regular' XL-15 has an XL-12 style drivecase, and has the bar oil tank fill below/behind the muffler. I had an XL-15 (though without the gear drive clutch cover). Traded it to Randy Watson, as he had a gear drive cover without a saw. He's posted pics of it in the Homelite thread.

This Super XL-15 on the other hand as the XL-Automatic/SXL type drivecase (which can accept the gear driven auto oiler pump) with the oil fill up in front of the handlebar bracket. However.............the auto oiler pickup is NOT used. The large welch plug visible in the pic is blocking off the hole where the threaded XL-Auto/SXL auto oil pump pickup would be. I've only seen this configuration twice before:

-Once on an obscure Canadian variant of a Super XL. Was blue and white, and had a strange model # that escapes me now. Owned by our friend Tim (Fossil). That was the second saw with the auto oiler drivecase..............but no auto oiler pump which I was made aware of.

-The first was a manual oiler Super XL owned by my friend Dave. Here's a few pics I shot of it. Notice the same welch plug blockoff in the auto-oiler pickup hole. This saw has a tubular spacer on the crankshaft to take up the space (on the longer SXL crank) that would normally be taken up by an auto oiler drive gear (to position the clutch in the right spot.

Here's a Super XL Automatic that I photographed on the same day to show what a 'normal' Homelite XL-series saw with the auto oiler drivecase looks like. You can see (under the grime) the slotted head of the auto-oiler pickup. Notice also the difference in the MN/SN tag. There is a spot next to the SN for "AO" to signify the auto oiler.

Good info Aaron, what is the recommended oil for the gear box? This saw has a wick style fuel filter which suprised me.

It's definitely from the time period where the wick fuel pickup was used. The Homelite SM sez to use 90W gear oil. That would have been GL-1 at that time. 50W motor oil is about the same viscosity of GL-1.

And if anybody was watching feepay the other day, you would have seen the red XL-15 gear drive cover come by. The saw Aaron and I traded was red, my drive was blue and now will get a red cover to match.

Nice saw Jim! Mine is running a 30" bar without any issues and .404 chain. I do have a .375 gear set for it as well and may swap that on when I change out the drive cover for the red one. It looks great next to the XL-500.... another Aaron assisted acquisition!

I missed that red cover on ebay. Post pics when you can.

It won't compare with that Poulan 74? of yours that I ran in Iowa, I really liked that saw.

Nope, not quite fair to compare to the 92cc Super 72.

So this Super XL-15 is what 60cc I'm assuming?

Still a neat saw. This thread reminds me, I think I have a recoil cover up in the attic of the shop that says XL-15 on it. I'll have to look sometime.
