ok so ive got an 038 mag, i ported the head as much as i was comfortable with, opened the exhaust up and what not, what else can a guy do to make this saw and other saws better, besides taking the head to a machinist? also is decking the cylinder make that huge of a difference? my mag already runs a 32" aluminum bar with a full skip husky chain and cuts great, has no problems pushing that bar. also would switching sprokets help? and if so how much? this mind u is a question for my 038 mag as well as other saws. thanks guys

I'm not sure what your porting consisted of as you really need to use a degree wheel and have a specific plan on hand before grinding the ports as they all need to work together for top performance. Bumping up the compression ratio is also a good way to gain performance but unless you go to a two piece head/cylinder you'll need to do some more work to the ports to make up for lost port height when you deck the cylinder to raise compression.

If you want serious gains, then you'll need to run a tuned pipe.

(not my saw, random google image)

A pipe will make for serious gains in power, and allow you use more agressive port timing. But then there is the whole packaging and noise thing that makes it impractical for a woods saw.

A pipe needs to be designed one for your engine and then have it fabricated. There is software available to help you, but you'll still need to do some testing to find out what works best. It's not cheap to have a custom pipe fabricated. I'd suggest doing a google search on hydrostatically formed pipes, it's a fairly reasonable way to make a proto-type if you have the tools.

You could try picking up a used 60cc dirtbike pipe. Odds are it will be less than ideal, but perhaps enough in the ballpark to see some gains.

Durations will decide the dimensions of the pipe. Lots of work brazing or tig welding.

aluminum bar?

Do any of the builders offer expansion chamber fabrication? I suppose we'll here it does'nt suit a work saw bla bla....It's a reasonable question when no single modd will provide the power increase of a sweet tuned pipe. IMO best 2stroke advancement developed in many decades.

Software? In school all we had was pen and paper.

Pen and paper? Luxury!

Why, back in the day..after working 24 hours down to the mines, we had to trudge miles to school, in the lava fields, uphill..both ways..while our pet saber toothed badgers gnawed our ankles. At school, the teachers had us just dip our fingers in the blood and scribble on stretched out mastodon hides...and we liked it!

Kids today, spoiled rotten!

I bet I know you, that's the same place I went to school. Which class were you in, I may be older, but still have fond memories of the place...LOL
