the voices in my head tell me to buy chainsaws
Easy ways to tell a saw apart without cleaning a number and looking it up when there are no badges or tank handle to tell them apart.
Sometimes you need to figure out what a saw is based on a crappy online pic and these "cheats" help me.
I am sure there are more.

the corners on the 044 /440 are behind the recoil so if you can see the corner next to the brake handle it is a 046/460, to tell the 10mm vs 12mm 044 you really need to remove the recoil or look at it from the top between the muffler and recoil corner.

Thanks for the information. Going to have to check mine. I know it has angled fins. This will finally answer my question of 10mm or 12mm.

Oh I am guilty of that too, but if somebody who knows at least a little about saws is selling a saw they will at least know what saw it is, whereas if I see a random saw on CL for 200.00 I want to know which saw it is before I call some stranger to haggle :)
I need to grab a bunch more pics for telling the difference by different parts and the differences between the 064 066 and MS660. All of those used to puzzle me when a saw had no top cover badge. Heck I once bought an 064 thinking it was an 044 and came on here to brag, just in time to be educated on my good fortune :)

I think i remember that ;)

I once rebuilt the top end of a saw for the owner of this saw, it was an 066, had to be because I ordered 066 parts for it. That's why I wondered if this ms440 was in reality his 066 but guess not. I assume the 044 and 066 take different flywheels, the one piece, not the plastic ones.

I hate digging up an old thread, but can someone confirm some MS440's came with the II mark on the bottom of the case? My saw has a slant above the oil fill. When I bought it I thought it was a 440 and then I saw the II mark and was wondering if it was a 460.

Just found this thread, so here’s your answer: newer 440 crankcases have the II mark on the bottom as well…
