Ever since I saw the first Stihl 066 starter design, with the dual opposed plastic pawls in the rope pulley rotor, I wondered if the older 045/056 series saws could be retrofitted from their aged single pawl starter design. The pawl tip ends wear out too fast on the single types & sometimes the aluminum pawl pocket in the old style rope rotors break out prematurely... I know, I know, if it was a Husqvarna saw it would only take one pull to start it up, ha ha!

The newer style Stihl S056 starter rotor #1117-190-1011 (or kit #1117-007-1041) now has the two opposed pockets for the dual pawls, and the 056 uses the same pawl part number as the 066, # 1124-195-7200. I bought a couple of the 066 dual pawl starter springs #1124-195-3500 & two extra pawls, then installed one on a Mag II 056 starter for a trial. The dual type 066 spring clips over the shaft end perfectly on the 056 & it engages/disengages the pawls like a charm.

Note that you need the pawl type fanwheel design to begin with. Either the two piece Bosch system, or the later SEM type one piece flywheels work fine. They all have a symetrical number of ratchets pockets cast inside the flywheel, either six or eight if I remember. Ended up doing two saws last night with the conversion, & will do the rest of them as I can find/buy the newer dual pawl rotors at the right prices.
