I ended up buying 5 spools and have everything from 3.5.- 5.5 covered. Ordered them and they were here the next day. I will never get ripped of at a saw shop again.

I go to ebay and search for starter rope for my model of chainsaw. There is almost always someone advertising starter rope, and a lot of them will state the size of what they are selling. Works for me.

I like to use use at least 4.5 on the 365/372 saws and 5.5 on the 394/660 saws.

I use 3.5mm for all my saws (biggest is a 394). I rarely break starter rope, and it allows more cord to be on the pulley, which I like

I use the biggest rope I can on a starter pulley so the rope doesn't pull between itself and cause a hard pull and premature failure. With #4.5 on a 372, I can use the full one meter length of rope. I try to use 1 meter of rope on all the 60cc and above saws. I use the Stens rope the same as Gary.

Eventually that will spread the pulley to the breaking point.

Use the largest diameter rope that will fit pulley and guide.

I am certain these guys are correct. My saws are all still on their original starter assemblies using 3.5. When I use 4.5 or 5 I pull too far and mess up the recoil. I have long monkey arms, however

The Pro Lads whose saws I maintain. I have replaceed the the worn/broken starter cords, with dyneema cored/ polyester sheathed cord of the same diameter as OEM, it costs slightly more than standard cord, but is seeming to wear better & is less springy than original, still a bit to soon to say for sure if it`s a better bet,but seems to be heading that way.
