I am looking at purchasing a trailer for hauling wood. I do some tree jobs but mainly I want it for hauling wood for home use from my shack 80 miles away. I want something fairly heavy duty that will hold about 1.5 cords. I was tinkering with the idea of a dump trailer but the cost of them changed my mind. I have an old 73 binder that I use to use but the old girl is getting a little tired.
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions if I have one built. What do you use and what do you like about it? What if anything would you want to have different on it. Pictures are certainly welcome and appreciated. Thanks for any and all replies!

18 foot car trailer will work beautifull i have one thats a triple axle but a tandem axle car trailer will be more then enough. You basically need a trailer that is rated at 7,000 and most car trailers are, if your only going to do 1.5 cord a trip you won't overload it even green. A decent car trailer on craigslist will bring 1,500 to 3,000 depending on options, age, etc.

Hopefully beefie sees this thread and chimes in, in my opinion his is the perfect setup to haul wood a distance greater than a few miles. I don't have pics of mine but it works, its an 18 foot, 14000 lb equipment trailer that I put sides on, I wish it had more places to anchor vertical boards for the side boards.

I would rather have a dump also but like you said $$$$$. Don't know what your are going to use to haul with. This handles anything I need to do. Wood, tractor, materials, junk cars. Can be loaded with forklift if need be. It is 14,000lb, 20' flat + 5' dove, 8' wide deck, stake pockets every 2', trailer weight is 4,700lbs, (that will give you 1.5 cord green oak) I have had 2 full cords (10' logs) on it before for a short run. The one thing I haven't done yet is get one of those cranes to lift some of those bigger logs with out bringing the tractor along.

Nice rig!

Thanks for the responses, tips and pictures. I never gave the car hauler a thought. I will have to start watching the list.

Thanks again!

I bought a 16' tandem axel with brakes with a GVW of 10,0000 from a posting on CL for $1100. Be patient and take your time looking. Try using craiglook.com - it will make it easier to search listings within a specific distance from your zip code (a trailer is worth a little bit of a drive).

+1 Craiglook.com is darn good.. Ive been prowling that site for a few months and finally got me a 1ton dually for $1000 for a new wood hauler. 290 miles later its finally in my garage..

WS, I guess it depends on the species of wood and whether wet or dry, but I would say a rough estimate for a hardwood cord and a half would be close to 8000lbs...give or take (I'm sure someone will correct me :)). Add about 2500lbs for a properly braked heavy duty trailer and you're at 10500lbs of weight. I would look at 12000lb GVW trailers...but that's just me. I would rather be 'over-gunned'.

My ears were ringing

Somebody needs some trailer advice. First is what are you going to use to haul the trailer. Is it going to be a hafe ton pickup, then I would get a tandem axle car trailer ,not exceeding 7000lb. If it was a 3/4 ton then I would go with a equipment trailer not exceeding 10500lb. If I had a 1 ton single axle then I would go with a trailer 14000lb. If it was a dually 1 ton then I would go with a 22000lb. trailer. If you look at the top of the firewood forum you will see a sticky on wood weight. Take it and print it out, keep it in your vehicle. That way at least you will have a rough idea on what your weight maybe.

Here is a pic of the trailer I built with just shy of 2 cord on it. Part of the wood was dead and part was green . This is the max I would ever put on this trailer. I built the wood sides to be 2' tall and no that if I stack the wood on the trailer it is exactly 1.5 cord. Any ? Just ask.

KMB I like the wire idea. What are you using for stakes? I am thinking of using some C - channel with 1x material for sides.

i used all 5/4" x 6" x10' treated decking for my sides. the vertical supports are doubled up, and the horizontal rows are sandwiched between them, its sturdy as hell, all held to the metal sides with U-bolts for quick removal.

I have a 20 foot PJ 7000 GVW that I have 28" sides on built from 5/4 treated. Randomly thrown in it will haul 1 1/2 full cord and 2 full cord if I stack it in. Nice trailer, $2600 out the door at my local trailer dealer. I pull it with an '02 2500 Cummins or a '91 3500 Dually Cummins whichever one I feel like driving that day. I also have a 32 foot tandem dual gooseneck (20,000 gvw) that I pull with the 2500 as well, I haven't hauled much for wood on it, just equipment. I am actually thinking about selling the 32 as I just don't use it enough...

I don't think it was me who mentioned the wire idea.

Since all I have is my Dad's 96 Ram 1500 things like the goose neck and even a big car trailer are out. I sprung the $3500 for an eight foot dump trailer. I got a Pequea. Best money I ever spent. The Pequea came with options that the Easy Dumper and Bri-Mar charged a good bit more for. Mine is 5,000 GVW and the others in the same price range were 3,000 GVW. Mine has breaks and theirs didn't. Mine has a 5 foot fold down ramp that I can drive my BIL's Kubota tractor up and theirs had stamped steel tail gates. Maybe I just got lucky when I got it. Not knocking the other brands, I know they make good trailers too. Just at the time Pequea had the best deal. I'll try and get some pics, Joe.
