Red Gum dust and Stihl HD Filters

Ok guys i know what you are thinking i have herd it all before, but i think a lot of you dont beleave us Ozzys when we say the very fine dust gets THROUGH the HD Stihl filters, well i am going to show whats going on.The pics below are of a 660 with a HD filter (same for 440,460 880 and so on) what i do to help stop the saws injesting the fine dust is to spray the spit back cover in and out with filter oil, this saw had two tanks of fuel through it and after wiping the spit back cover with some paper towel this is what is getting THROUGH the filter.Scary ha,try this yourself you may get a shock.:msp_ohmy:
What i am wondering is has anyone tryed the new HD 2 filters in Ozzy red gum.

I don't see much redgum, But am going to order a HD2 filter as soon as possible. If i can get one this week I will try it this weekend. will not be in redgum but should give an idea of the difference between it and the HD filter. I have also seen an oilable insert for the standard hd filter recently that might be worth a try.

I made up an oiliable insert but it restricted air flow to much and it didnt run any good. What was the one you have seen like ?.

i think the only way to beat the dust is an ARB Snorkel stuck on the saw! best ive found to control it is the hd kit with lots of oil and grease. next step maybe to submerge the logs under water or fit a spray kit off a demo saw!

the oilable insert I saw was not as dense foam as that, I will try and find one for you and PM you the link as the sellers are not site sponsors.

pm sent. When I say not as good as OEM, performance wise they are A1 just cosmetically you can see they are not OEM.

Andrew,
I can say with a fair bit of confidence that the HD2 filter will keep the Redgum dust at bay. Not a cracker has gotten through the same filter material on my 261 although in saying that Redgum doesn't go through some flocked Husky filters on their smaller saws but makes my 390XP flocked HD filters look stupid. The bigger saws "may" be able to pull certain particulates through the filter material that smaller saws can not - tough call.
Good old Redgum eh? It's like a chainsaw filter's arch nemesis...

Good pics too old son

When ya think about it we may as well run them with no filter and cut redgum and when they stop take them back to dealer and use the warranty and get a new one..................

or a makita if you prefer blue

I had a Makita, it clashed with the colour schemes on my Dolmar 7900's :D So I swapped the awesome top end onto one of my 7900's and sold it to Wayne (gmax) with a BB kit.

Sheesh, I was nearly banned from a certain forum for having the temerity to say that after the great leader bagged out a newbie for having a Shinny

Gee. I think I actually DID get banned from that same forum. One dare not question the TreeGod, no matter whether it's rational or not. In fact one dare not even have a different line of thought to him :)

Rumor has it they have THE best filtration, bar none! I looked at one before I bought my 660 and if I was going 70cc I would certainly buy one. wish they made one in the mid 90s.

have used a few and they go like cut snakes, just do not have a few of the cosmetic details of the stihls etc, but the price tag reflects that and they seem to just go and go.

Trav, I would have happily bought one too, there's a dealer in the nearest large town and I went and fondled one a few times, I just got a better deal at the time on an ebay Makita.

One of the young blokes in our RFS brigade works at that dealer and he only mentioned the other day they sell more Shinny's than Huskies and they have a great reputation among their customers.

BTW, Ben/isuzurover mentioned the other day that if Mann-Hummel in Germany make the Stihl and Dolmar filters he can get the specs of them to compare.

He's the man when it comes to filtration ;)

are these new hd2 filter setup available in oz yet? im guessing id better start saving so i can afford to buy one, piggy bank got raped hard today paying for a genuine set of stihl rings, i only got em just in case i need em in an emergency but i think i will frame them and hang in the bar room
