I wanted to get this flywheel off today and didn't have access to a removal tool this is the flywheel on a 028WB I don't know if the other Stihl models use this design or not I haven't checked yet, but here is an easy way to make a removal tool if you have access to a welder and saw, Take a piece of 1/2" pipe threaded and cut about 1/2 of the threads off of one end of it, now cut the pipe about 1 1/2" long, get a 1/2" bolt and nut (after building mine I would recommend using a fine threaded nut and bolt) and weld the nut to the end of the pipe making sure to leave space for a wrench to get on the nut, now thread the pipe into the flywheel insert the bolt and using 2 wrench's, one holding the nut and one on the bolt run the bolt in and the flywheel will come off, I know the flywheel is a metric thread but the pipe will thread in 2 turns and bottom out on the flywheel inside without crossthreading or binding in the threads they must be the same or so close that it cannot be noticed.

That's pretty much what the Stihl tool is. There are 2 different sizes. In general, 1 type for the older saws, the other for newer saws. Also, for 031s and 045s, you have to use Stihl's tool or a harmonic balance puller. Those are all I've ever used.

BTW, when using any puller it is always best to get the puller snug and give it a good rap on the end. A taper-fit flywheel or gear or whatever will almost always come loose. It's never a good idea to wrench away till it pops loose. That's a good way to break something.

By the way the reason for cutting off half of the threads on the pipe are when the pipe is threaded they taper the threads so if you use the first part of it, it will be undersized and loose in the flywheel, so when you cut it off you will be at the part that isnt tapered and it will fit in the thread snug. Sorry I forgot to mention that earlier.

If you want to buy the puller from Stihl I believe the part # is 1110-890-4500 and is $8.75. A ebay seller sold them for $25. That was until he flooded the market and they did not sell.

How much have you guys paid for this tool. I ordered one from my dealer and when ordering the employee told me that it would cost a "whopping $8.00", but today when I went into the shop the owner sold it to me for $38.00!!! I was flabbergasted but bought it because I felt obliged to since I had them special order it but 38 bucks come on! Just getting opinions on what this thing should cost please.

Check my sig...

Thats what I thought! I think that I will bring it back tomorrow. If he will not take it back that's it for me showing up at his shop!

Anybody around here know what the part should run in the ballpark $8.75 like Bill said?

Like I try to give the local guy the business... I bought a 361 from him for retail price and I have bought much more parts for this 064 project but comon I was quoted $25.00 for the 064 seal kit and $8.00 for the puller from the employee. I even put a 20 dollar bill down on the order for good measure. It took a month to get the parts in. I got a message back on monday sometime that my parts are in and I when I showed up today the owner asks me "didin't you get my message"? and I said yes I am sorry I could not stop by until today. Then he proceeds to royally fleece me. I think I am dealing with another shop from now on.

It is just hard because I know the employee (The guy that put the order in)well because he is a member of my church and basically the only reason I go to that shop.

Stihl tools are not suppose to be resold. The employee quoted you cost. Most likely the owner charged you for freight plus markup. Had you gotten the part the next day, sure I can understand the freight charges...thats not what happened.

I would go back and talk with the owner. Let him know exactly what you were quoted. Explain that you understand his employee screwed up, you known he needs to make a profit to stay in business, but the charge seems excessive to you.

See what he says. Most likely, your not going to get credit nor will they take it back.

It's getting harder all the time to shop local. I ordered some weld-on chain hooks for my loader bucket from my local dealer. I don't make it a habit of asking prices on small items for fear they might think I'm cheap on something. Well, they came in and it was over $35.00. The hooks were like $15 each plus they charged $7 for UPS because they were OOS. The same ones are $3.99 here.

I hear ya. On the other hand I spend alot of time across the counter...I get to see some of the fun stuff that goes on.

If a shop is out of stock, make sure to ask when they are placing their next stock order (normally they get free freight with stock orders plus additional discounts). You shouldn't have to, the person you are talking to should offer it; we can get it for you rush it'll cost extra but you have it in x days or if you can wait we'll bring it in with or next stock order.

Seems both sides of the counter have forgotten how to treat people. Shame really...

I guess I am lost as I believe back in 2005 I posted the part number and price

I see some posts about freight. I belive it used to be $50 now MVS is up to $75 per order. Most dealers will have at least that twice a week thus no reason to pass freight to the customer unless a guy comes in Thursday wanting in part on Friday and you have already placed the end of the week order.

In any event of you want the puller let me know.

I thought these flywheels were metric. I had a buddy machine me a 22 MM and a 26 MM so I could pull one on an 056.
