Making 051 become 076

Isn't it just a P&C change? Sometimes "just" a P&C change isn't as simple as one would hope. That off center club on my bench used to be a working Stihl 041. Now it's a non-working Stihl 041 with an 041 Super jug on it. Should work fine, but doesn't.

Hi everyone, does anyone ever heard about transforming a stihl 051 into a 076? is that possible?
yep - done it, and all's well. Apart from the fact it doesn't have a manual overide oiler, so I'm just bout to sell it (bought an 075). Look here - http://arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=62135

very true, things sometimes go wrong... I heard of someone screwing up a 6401-7900 conversion recently. In theory it's just tapping the cylinder stud holes out to M6 though. Assuming it's a later 051 though, otherwise I wouldn't bother ;)

I must have missed somthing,have you talked about your 041 before? :confused:
 
biggest problem you'll find i reckon is getting a good 076 P&C when you want. Sure they come up now and then for the right price, but when you really want one suddenly there are none. Apart from the expensive new OEM and cheap(er) new aftermarket (still no-one's had the balls, me included, to try one of these out. But they may be ok...)
 
I was going to do the conversion on mine, but when I tore it down I found my case was the older style with cutouts below the tabs on the jug. I just put it back together stock. BUT - I just picked up another 051, and this one has a different style case that will work, so I'm going to convert that one. Search the posts on here, there's lots of good info. You'll have to tear down your saw and see what style you have. If it's the old style with the "cut-outs" on the case, it would leave an air gap at the base when you install the bigger jug (bad news bears).

You will need:
An 076 cylinder, OR one for a TS760 cutoff saw, and of course a piston.

6mm cylinder studs.

An 076 intake

Possibly an 076 muffler

The ports on the TS 760 jug I picked up are WAY bigger than the 051 ports. The intake can't just be ported out to match, because the bolt holes aren't in the same spot. There may be other odds and ends, but they are essentially saws built on the same case. The cool part is that parts are still pretty available (due to the long run of the TS 760 and TS510 cutoff saws possibly?), so you can get the stuff you need. Just remember, easily available doesn't necessarily mean cheap.

Are there any other parts needed that I left out? I'm going to be working on my saw as soon as I have finished collecting parts.
 
If the 051 is a later model then it should just be a matter of boring and tapping the cylinder bolt holes to 6mm and switching from bolts to studs after that a new piston/cylinder should do it. Also don't forget to retune your carb afterward. I just gave THALL from this site everything he needs to change his 051 to an 076. The only downside as said before is that you do give up the manual oiler wich can be trouble with some of the longer bars that the 075/076 can pull, especially in long cuts with the bar buried. It should not be a problem with a 32" or less though I would think.
