Got an old saw from my wife's grandpa today

I don't know much about this; I always ran grandpa's stihl when I was a kid.

My wife's grandpa was a logger in his youth. This came out of his garage and my father-in-law wants me to get it running for him.

Not sure where to start with it and I'm looking for advice. Probably hasn't run in 8 or so years.

Put some gas and oil in it................Sorry couldn't help it.



after you try and start it,if doesn't then check the plug for spark.Report everything you can about it.And someone here will try and help you out.


But you at least have to try and get it running.

Looks like most of the markings are gone.... I'm not sure which is choke etc... we'll see.

Wonder if I should take the bar and chain off to try and get it started?

Choke knob should be right side of the rear handle, button to the left of the handle is the manual oiler. See if it has spark and compression before trying to fire it up.
 
I wouldn't worry about the bar and chain.The choke is on the right and the lever on the left is for pumping oil to the chain.The on/off switch should be up for on.

Set the switch to on,pull the choke,pull the throttle and push the button on the left side of the handle then let go of the throttle.That sets the throttle for half speed.

Now pull till she pops then take the choke off and pull till she's runnin'

Switch to the left of the rear handle is the on/off. Manual oiler is under your thumb. Should not have an auto oiler so give it some pumps before cutting and a few more during. Choke is to the right of the rear handle. All the way out is full choke, half way in is half choke, all the way in is no choke. Trigger lock is on the left of rear handle.
 
Compression is a "wet" check like a boat, right? (squirt a little oil, pull the cord 5 or so times, then check compression?)

120 is a bit low. It will run but won't have much power. As long as the piston/cylinder are not scored then it is just a matter of new rings wich is not too bad of a fix. There a couple of members here who are pretty good with the old homelite stuff. I would still fix it.

This saw is 77cc, I don't know how many versions( thin or thick rings) of this motor homelite made but there a lot of saws in this family that are 82cc so make sure that your rings are for the right bore.

I put in new fuel and pulled it about 20 times..... HOLY CRAP THAT THING RUNS LOUD !!!

Got it running (left the bar off to get it cleaned first); but didn't overrev !

Where would I find the large air filter and the little one that goes just on the side of the carb?

I think I just found some filters on bailey's site from the forum here....

Do I need the "Super XL" stuff?

I don't see "super" anywhere on the XL-700 saw???
 
I found edge & engine from the forum here... I'll see if they have the two air filters....
