I got around to digging into my newly aquired 018C.

I pulled the starter cover off and pulled the gas tank out, made some "makeshift" fuel line to try and make it run. Put it all together and got no love from it. Few drops down the carb and it roared to life, then died.

Its got a mess of compression, I mean, you have to put your foot in the handle to pull it, just holding down on the loop will only do it so many times, it wants to pull out from under you.

My fuel line was too big at the carb, its not sealing, but I can absolutely hear the crank bearings whining when I pull the rope.

It has a 14" Stihl Mini Rollomatic bar and chain, good clutch, I think the chain brake arm is broken off though.

Has the top cover and air filter..and the tool less bar tensioner. Its all there, just needs fuel line, probably a carb kit, new crank seals and new crank bearings, I think it would run fine.

But its only a 32cc saw...and its only a 14" bar.

Worth it?

Im much more anxious to get the 025 going full swing with a clutch, bar, chain and air filter, its a slighly bigger saw, and actually runs.

It's a great little saw... but are you really sure it needs bearings? I've seen plently of bad MS180/018/017, but never seen one with bad bearings.

When it runs, it sounds like a Big Screw Style supercharger howling away..When you just pull the rope, it sounds like its running a gearbox with straight cut gears.

I'd still pull the starter cover off and clutch drum.. then turn it by hand.

If it has water inside it.. then maybe.. but if that's the case the crank is likely shot.

I did, tonight.

Starter cover OFF, and the clutch drum was free wheeling on the crank, no noises from the clutch when I spun it by hand. When I took the plug out, I spun the crank over by hand and I still clearly heard the noise.

I dont know how familiar you are with Lawm Mower spindles, but IF you've ever heard one on the verge of seizing up, thats what this one sounds like. BUT BUT BUT, I could not feel any crank play, in any direction, except horizontally, and even then, only VERY slightly, like on any small engine, you have to have some crank play.

I also dumped abou a teaspoon of 2 stroke oil down the carb, then a couple teaspoons of gas, shook it up, and it didnt get any quieter when I pulled it over.

Could it be the rod bearings?
