I have a 028 super lower end that I was going to put a top end off another saw that has a crack in the case, but I noticed that the clutch side crank bearing cage is cracked (plastic) and has a piece lose. The bearings seem tight no play at all, but looks like this piece could fall out. I just want to know if the bearing is bad because of that or try to get the piece out and it will be ok.

Thanks,

It's bad, will fail completely, and the balls can then move and pinch the crank (or worse). The bearing needs to be replaced.

Thanks for the info thats what I was afraid of. I still have the lower end from the other saw and the bearings look good and have no play in them. It just has a crack in the case on the flywheel side It can be repaired I just figured this would be a cleaner and prettier fix. Maybe in the future I will put crank bearings in this lower end for the experience, especially if I end up with all the parts for another saw.

Thanks again
