I took my 028 WB to the Stihl dealer and they initially declared my ignition module faulty, then said that they screwed up and my carb was bad and refused to do anything further since the "Stihl" part # carb isn't made anymore. I've replaced my carb with a brand new OEM unit, and my saw will still barely fire and run. Grounding the spark plug to the case, I get an inconsistent spark and suspect my ignition module to be faulty, but am not sure what type of ignition it is so I can order the proper part to replace it.

My understanding is that Stihl 028 saws came with both electronic ignition and "points". I have a very slim grasp of what "points" are, but have no idea what they looks like and don't know what I have. The following is a picture of my ignition module - is this an electronic ignition or "points"?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Its points. Take that coil out, cut the wire to the points and install a 0000-400-1300 ignition module and your ignition troubles are over. No need to remove the points under the flywheel, leave them in there, they're shot anyway..

You can use the Stihl number that THALL posted or you can get a Nova/Atom module and it will do that same thing. Do a search here for Atom or Nova and it will show you have to install them. Welcome the site fellow Michigander!! Go Blue. Where about you located?

Thanks for the quick reply and part number!

Thanks. I was in the midst of a reply to THALL about whether a genuine Stihl replacement was best or not when I got interrupted by a phone call. I'll be sure to check on Nova/Atom replacement pricing as well.

Go blue indeed - alumni here! I'm in the Livingston county area.

Go can get one on ebay, this one or you can go to your local NAPA store and they sell the same one. I have used this a few times and have been successful with all of them.

Yes you have old ignition module, but you can change to electronic ignition 0000 400 1300. These ignition modules using MS 026, MS 029, MS036.
