Question for the pros. The 028 I picked up doesn't have the brake assembly in it, and I want it to. So, on a long shot, I called the guy who I bought it from, and asked if he might still have the parts lying around. He told me it never had a brake, and he thought it may have been an option at the time. He also claimed to be the original owner, and wished it did have the brake.

Now I figure there's three senerios here. Either, (A) he removed the brake and didn't want to be bothered any further, (B) he wasn't the original owner, and a previous owner removed it, or (C) it really was an option back then.

So, question is, was this an optional feature?

If it's an AV, you should be able to add the brake. If it's an older Wood boss, you cannot - it never had the brake or the ability to add one. For the AV - $20 in parts... plus the handle.

I don't remember it being an "option", but the machinng was in place before it became a "feature", so maybe... In the same era, the 032 and later 056's had the chain brake optional.

Yes, it is an AV model. I am bidding on a complete brake assembly on ebay as we speak. I could see the saw was meant to have one, (evidenced by the hard points and oil pump cover molding) but found it unusual that a safety feature would be "optional."

79 or so was when they were an option. Our 028 doesn't have a brake but it could be put in if I had the parts. My old boss has a 028 wb with a chain brake and points ignition. Ours has no chain brake and electronic ignition.

I couldn't tell you weather our 028 is a straight wb or an av. The plastic says straight wb but I think it might have been replaces when the saw was smashed. It has the rubber av mounts.

Anyone know if the 029 chain brake assembly is cross compatible to the 028? It looks very similar in the pics, but that doesn't mean much. I can pick it up for $19 shipped if it would fit.

NUTS, figures. Thanks for the quick reply though.

Looks like I'm gonna get into a bidding war over the 028 assembly on ebay. (there's always one other person who wants something a little more than me :) ) I won't run it up though. Another deal will come along soon enough.
