I have been reading on here about the 028 seems to have a good rep. Anyway took a chance on an ebay special payed $150 for it shipped. Is this a good price? He states its in running order and a good saw. Ya I know I have had good and bad luck on the ebay specials. But he has a good feedback rating so I hope this is true. I am also wondering if an 18" bar is a good size bar for the saw? As far as chains go would it be best to run a semi chisel or a square chisel on it? the only thing it will be cutting is pine. I have a square chisel on my 036 and love the way it cuts but not sure if the 028 has enough umph on it to handle the square chisel. Sorry for going on but there are people on here that have forgotten more about these saws than I will ever know (but I'm trying to learn) and I want to get advise from people like this. Thanks.

Looks like you did fine. They are great saws. Hopefully it will run and idle smoothly which I suspect it will. I run square/full chisel on mine and it does fine even in oak. Should be no problem in pine. Eric

Oh, and on the earlier vintage 028s there is only a spring-loaded chain guard with no chain break mechanism. Just so you're not surprised, expecting a chain break.

028

Lost,
I have the exact same saw.I bought mine back in 85 brand new. This saw has seen the worst and still runs like the day I brought it home.It even went swimming.I had to strip down and go in after it. I replaced the rope and air filter, and the damm thing started after about a dozen pulls. This is one of Stihls best pieces. BTW, I will give 175$ for it, Ken

Thanks for the reply's, I'm hoping it will hold true to it's reputation and work well. I bought the saw to take the place of a husky 41 (good little saw for a used one when I bought it, it has given no problems. But was looking for something with just a bit more power) the 028 isn't much bigger in the cc's but from what I have heard it is a torqie little saw and is forgiving when pushed. I'm not saying its a 036 or even trying to classify it as a saw in that range but that wasn't what I was looking for in the first place. By the way here is one that looks cleaner and is going for $175 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=20538&item=4307597543&rd=1

do that saw a favor.. they will run pretty good in very adverse conditions..
put a new rim sprocket ,and bar on it..[and chisel chain]
hold it by the recoil rope and see if it holds..its not a death nell if it dont, but better if it does..u probanly got a good saw..one of the few i mite buy, without personally hearing it run..check the oiler, although ive never had one be bad on this particular saw..good luck..
by the way a safer way is to watch this forum for good saw by dan an others like him here..that way u getting a saw thats been honestly evaluated, an u know what u getting..jmo

I was planning on having a rim sprocket put on it when it comes in, also a new bar and chain. Figure I might just take it down to the local stihl shop and have him tune it up for me while he is at it(he's a pretty nice guy and worked out a nice deal for me on my 036 when I traded in a 029 for it). Hmmm, nice guy worked out a nice deal for me on trade in, REPEAT BUSINESS. Hey I only use saws for a bit of firewood here and there not like the pro's but I figure he has at least earned repeat business from me even if it is only a few bucks. Think I will also hit him up and see if there are any courses locally (haven't been able to find any) for teaching good chainsaw safety and technique. I have had to rely on the way I had seen my father do it, and what I could read on sites, but would like to learn more, figure it wouldn't hurt and may save some hurt or worse. Thanks for all the advise all.
