I came across this video on Youtube showing a modified Stihl 039. In the description he lists several modifications he has done to it that I don't understand. I have absolutely no experience modifying chainsaws so it is no wonder I don't know what he is talking about, but I was wondering if anyone on this site knows what these mods are and can they be done to an 029. I recently had some trouble with my 029 running poorly, and a compression check by a questionable compression checker showed low compression. I am still not sure if I checked it correctly or not, but if it is low and I have to do some engine work on it I may want to do these mods while I am at it.

Here is a list of the mods mentioned in the video:

039 with enlarged Quad+ ported muffler,
ported baffel,
highflow intake,
tuned carb,
plug gap .025

Here's the video:

Thanks

You could even consider using an 039 jug and piston, modifing it and having a vert stelthey 029.

They are basically the same saw - just a different jug and piston.

039 with enlarged Quad+ ported muffler, - Modded muffler
ported baffel, - Ported cylinder
highflow intake, - Work on the intake side
tuned carb, - Maybe some jet work, or just a carb kit
plug gap .025 - Is this not the standard gap?

STUMPY - a member here has some experience and success with these saws.

Did you read that guys info on the vid? It's nothing more than a muffler modded 039. You can do the same to you're saw in maybes 30 minutes.

Yep...he has a MM and removed or opened the internal baffles.

That saw isn't anything special.

Remove the limiters from the carb needles with a screw. Remove the muffler cover and open the hole under the spark screen to something like these pics. Trim the deflector back some, retune and cut wood.

Thanks for the replies. The way the guy worded things it sounded like there was a bunch of fancy mods. I have already modified the muffler on my 029 and it did make a difference in performance. I modded my muffler exactly like the pics you attached.
