Stihl 029... what kind of sprocket comes standard for .325 chain? Is it rim or spur? If it is rim, what rim size is used? Mini, standard, or large?

Most of the saws I have delt with have the spur sprocket on them. There is a rim kit avalible for them if you wish. That part # is 1125-007-1041. It includes every thing you need to change it over. This kit has the rim sprocket with the large center hole.

mine came standard out of the box with a .325 7 tooth spur sprocket but i am about to pull the trigger and order the spline and cup from baileys for 13 bucks you can't go wrong and the dealer wants 18 for a spur so it is a no brainer.

Mine also came with the .325 7-tooth spur. I bought the whole replacement kit thru Ebay (I think it was from Baileys) for around $18. You get a 3/8" rim drive, new drum and needle bearings. You will need to keep the cir-clip and washer, so don't just fling them off like I did, thinking there was a new one in the package. Good Luck

The only reason why I asked. A friend of mine (whose 029 saw I have never seen) wants to upgrade to a 3/8" pitch chain. In a another post, I had stated that I told him that if he wants to upgrade from the .325, to wait until everything that he current has wears out and then make the switch. Most economical and logical in my opinion. Another poster suggested that he try an 8 tooth sprocket with the .325 to see if he likes that.

Well, when I wrote the original post, it was early in the afternoon and I had no way of talking to him yet. I was just trying to do some research into maybe trying an 8 tooth rim sprocket, if indeed, a rim is what he had on the saw. I could not remember what the old 029's ran on original equipment (rim or spur). At that time, I was placing my own order with Bailey's for parts and I was going to order him an 8 tooth rim to try. He will just have to wait for the next order....

The one thing that I don't really understand is the various sizes of rims available. I will have to call Bailey's and asked what fits what. When I bought the kit for my 025, it came with a rim, but what size is that rim? Is it a mini or a small. Now a replacement rim for my Husky 357, is that a mini, small, or standard size?? There seems to be no reference guide as to which size rims goes with what saw. Just a little confusing if you don't have quick access to the saw to measure.

I was going to let mine wear out first too. Then I decided to get a 20" bar, so I either had to get one in .325, or make the switch. I made the switch...but I can understand waiting.

Hey, just for info. How does the 029 handle with the 20" bar and 3/8 chain? He only wants to go 18" with a 3/8...

What kind of bar and chain are you running?

It should be OK with 18" and 3/8" with a 7-pin sprocket. If his goal is to standardize bars/chains across a number of saws, then this may be the way to go.

I happen to feel that .325"/7-pin is the ideal combination for this saw in most conditions, but others are free to disagree.
