I'm trying to fix up an old Stihl 031 with erratic spark. I figured a new condensor would be a good place to start, and bought the new square style with the bracket and screw. So how exactly did they intend this thing to be mounted? There is a screw hole near the old condenser that would work, but the bracket just doesn't seem necessary.

Thanks for the help,

-John

I changed my 031av over to electronic a long time ago - no more points or condenser problems. and it's easy to do

It depends on the condenser you received. If you have a clear screw postion just mount it. The bracket was intended to mount sideways for more clearance.

Cool, thanks for the help. It just seemed odd that they would go to the trouble of making the bracket if it wasn't required, so I wanted to make sure I'm not missing anything. I'll install the condenser without, and check for clearance.

And I have read up on the electronic ignition systems, but if the saw made it this long on the original condenser, I'll give it another chance. If it continues to cause problems, maybe I'll make the switch. I've got a flywheel from an 031 Electronic, so I can even get the timing correct (not to stir up that debate again...).
