If I get one of Bailey's 038 cylinder and piston kits (and put it on my 038avs).
I thought I better add that or someone would tell me I needed a saw first.
What else will it take to make it the same as a 038 Magnum???
The description says it is 52mm and fits all 038s except for Super. Mine is a 038avs Farm Boss.
How big of a job is it to get it right?
I have rebuilt carbs several times, replaced manifold boots, impulse lines etc. on various saws but never tackled anything to do with the engine itself.

Yeah actually the Farm Boss is the same as the super (50mm piston). Unless they have slots in the cylinder, a magnum cylinder will not directly bolt on to either a AV or a Super.

"Piston & Cylinder Kit Stihl 038/MS380 (52mm)

aftermarket piston and cylinder kit for Stihl chainsaws. This kit includes a piston, rings, pin, clips, and cylinder, all for one low price. Cylinder is chrome plated with a 52mm bore. We recommend purchasing our ring clamp set #10429 and gasket set #CRS 038 when assembling this kit. Fits the following models:

* Stihl 038 (except 038 Super), MS 380

* Replaces Part Numbers 1119 020 1201 and 1119 020 1202"
So this won't fit my Farm Boss??

Is 038 impulse line the same as fuel line?

It looks a little heavier.
Thanks

Find the service manual on here and take the piston out before ordering. It is best to measure once, and order once. My 038 Super is apart on the bench awaiting my shipment from Bailey's.

Bolt pattern on the case don't match the bolt pattern on the cylinder.

I chickened out on the 038 magnum cylinder and just bought the aftermarket piston from Curt Bailey.
While I have it apart I am replacing the impulse line and the dealer said it was the same thing as the fuel line. So I am using a piece of Tygon green line the same size as the old impulse line, just wanted to know if it would hold up???

Also any advice would be appreciated on replacing the piston. Or other things I should do while it is apart.
I don't have a ring compressor either, thought about trying a zip tie to see it it would work, its not that I'm too cheap I just don't have one available to buy.
Do I need to make a wood block to reassemble the piston to the rod?
If so how thick and how big is the slot?

Thanks
Dan

The proper fuel lines are moulded rubber. They fit the filter then have a couple of raised "anyuerisims" (sp?) to seal off where it goes through tank/ housing, then its a bit thinner up to the carb.

I think you can get by with most stiff line the proper dia for impulse lines and made of polymer/mixes that won't rot/soften . It's all the same dia.

If you are careful your fingernails will get the rings by. Not reccomended but I've done it.

For piston holder a 3/4- 1' piece of hardwood. Cut it so it looks like a tuning fork, just wide enough between to fit the rod, narrow enough to fit on top of the case and long enough that you can slide it in and out beneath the piston.

I think you'd be better off with the OEM impulse line, it's stiffer than tygon and less apt to kink or collapse and you can buy a little plastic ring compressor set for $3 or $4

Is there a gasket between the carb and the manifold on this saw?
I don't have one and I think the IPL shows one.
I have the rubber manifold that comes thru the housing, then the metal ring and that is all.
I can't imagine me losing it.
I still have parts from carbs I have rebuilt 10 years ago.
Also I don't have a gasket between the air breather and the other side of the carb either.

Thanks
Dan

Your dealer is wrong. Use the proper line. The carb seals agains the rubber intake boot with no additional gasket. The gasket was only used up through serial number X 13 360 413. No gasket for the filter base either. It does show a "baffle" though. Not sure what that is.

Brad and Lakeside...

Now which one of you is rightest:)

I tore my shop up looking for my missing gasket and I guess it's not missing.

The ipl sure seems to show a gasket with three holes- two for the bolts and one for the impulse inlet.

You have an old IPL.... it's been superceded. The gasket hasn't been used since 1984.... So which exact version of the 038 do you have?

Mine is a 038 Farm Boss AVS, has a 50 mm piston.

I didn't think I had lost anything other than my mind.

I think I need a newer IPL.

Thanks
Dan

The Super doesn't use the gasket.

Even the latest IPL show that gasket, BUT it has an attached tech note to explain where used.
