I know the magnum cylinder will not directly bolt up. Is the crank shaft in the super beefy enough to go bigger than 52mm magnum p & c. Is there a 54mm jug & piston that can be modified to fit up, or anything bigger than the magnum? Is it possible to machine either the magnum p & c, or something bigger to work on the super case. I like this saw a lot, but looking for more power. Saw shop says psi is at 165, probably has a lot of life left, but weighing options for more power. Or should i find an 066 to build up. Thanks Patrick,

Happy New Years sawin

Sounds like a good healthy saw. imo, use it as is and find another to work on for more power. Nothing wrong with having more than one saw.
look for a 064/066/660 to play with, or even a 046 and put on the big bore kit!

038's are great saws, heavy though. you can alwyas buy anohter top end an have it modded by one of the sponsors on here.

You can mess around with the magnum cylinder to make it fit on a Super case -just a tiny elongation of the holes in the back<> front directions (Stihl NW actually sent out a template to that a long tme ago). The crank is the same in both Super and Magnum.

However, part of what make a magnum roar is the triple ported muffer... so if you go to the effort to get the magnum cylinder to fit, get the real muffler also.

Bailey's has a big bore kit available for the regular 038 and 038 Super that is 52mm. That's the largest on these saws you can go. You could make a 54mm top end for the 038 Magnum but the case opening would have to be enlarged because it's not big enough to swallow a 54mm piston and there really wouldn't be enough volume to support that much displacement.

My super could use a new muffler currently. How can you tell the magnum triple ported from the standard?

thanks,

It has a big port on the left (facing the muffer), one on the front, and one on the right!

smart axe

I just looked over on ecrapbay, and it looked like all the muffler pictures are of the backside of muffler & not of front side. Also, my currently 038 has the one port on left, front is full of holes, but i didn't see any the new replacements that had holes, or are the pictures of product just that crappy? Any ideas on muffler? Local saw shop says you can't get that muffler from stihl any more, come on 20 years later they don't supply parts?

Also did the magnum or magnum duece use any different air filter? I am about due for filter as well.

Thanks for help

The new aftermarket replacements are junk - one tiny set of louver "holes" in the left side of the front cover... none in the back. Be carerful with the front - the "holes" are a heat screen, not for exhaust.

Stihl sells the 038 mufflers.. Not sure exactly which models (there are 6!). I'll post a pic of the varients later.

038's are heavy

I used to think that for years, but then i ended up with a 920 Jred, with 24" bar, now I think the 038 is light, that's why I am looking to try & catch up the lighter saw to the heavy 87cc saw.
