I thought I had this saw fixed, but when I am cutting with it, it pops. Its like a small backfire and I can't figure out what is causing it. I have tore down the whole carb and cleaned everything. I also have new gaskets from the cylinder to the air cleaner, new plug, and new air filter. It will start and rev just fine, but when put under a load it will pop and cut out bad. Any ideas? Thanks.

This may sound crazy but check your crank bearing for play you could be headed for bottom end trouble, I had similar prom with a 460 a few weeks ago and the crank bearing was going out

I have a 041 super ave that the crank bearing is loose. I took it apart and it looks like the case. Is it worth messing with?

I would say yes if you have the time to do it yourself..Plenty of people on here to head you in the right direction for any parts or help you might need.

New Questions
What can be done? 1. A new case? 2. Align bore the case and larger bearings and seals? 3. Knurl the bearnig bores in the case? 4. Suggestions?
THANKS

My 041AV used to have the same problem. I would get it started and begin my cut and it would pop and die. Talked to the mechanic at the local Stihl dealer and he told me it needed a new condensor. Went thru the ignition system this year and now it runs like a champ and is one of my favorite saws! I'll bet if you replace the points and condensor it'll be fine.

If your case is slogged out... I'd say it's not worth it... I've seen repairs done with red loctite, epoxy etc, but... A light knurl + loctite might work, but if you get a misalignment in the crank...

Reality - you have it all torn down - just get another old crank case and swap parts over. used 041 cases pairs are very very cheap... most get junked... I even know where there a brand new case!

How do I get to the condensor? I've worked on small engines, but not a chainsaw. One other thing I was thinking was is it a possibility that the diaphragm in the carb could have hardened up from sitting dry? I didn't try rebuilding the carb, just cleaning all of it.

You'll have to pull the flywheel to get to the points and condensor. The coil, points, and condensor are all mounted to a circular plate under the flywheel. The condensor is pressed into a hole in the plate. The points are located under a black plastic cover. Likely your points are fine, and you just need to replace the condensor. I kept thinking I had a lean problem too (backfiring thru the carb is a classic lean symptom), but after a carb overhaul, new fuel filter and fuel line, as well as checking the impulse line, I finally asked the mech at the Stihl dealer about it, and that's when he told me that my problem likely had nothing to do with the fuel system, but was actually ignition. And he was right!

Good, Well hopefully that will do it then. I'll get the part and I'll update on here what happens. Thanks.

Good luck, and I hope it solves your problem! I can't guarantee that will fix it, but from what you're describing, I'd almost put money on it. What I was told is that the condensor starts to break down with age, and that's a common problem with these saws as they rarely get any more ignition service than the occasional new plug.
