Before posting I did some research on the acresinternet.com site that many of you recommend, but I didn't come up with complete information. What were the years of manufacture for the 041 FarmBoss? I seem to have pieced together about 1977 to early or mid 80s (with an earlier 041 version beginning in 1967). Is any of this correct?

Also, the general idea I get from doing a search and reading old posts on this site is that the 041 is regarded nowadays as follows: solid quality and strong power but too heavy by today's standards for what you get in the saw. Is this a fair assessment?

I've seen some good-looking 041s on E-Bay, but I also know to be very cautious with saw-buying there.

Thanks, gentlemen, for your thoughts with any of this.

According to my lil black book here the 1st 041 came out in 1966 and the last version of it went out of production in 1985. The assessments you have read are correct, its well built, solid bottom end, I would say good power for its time, not as fast as todays models speed wise but brute power it was strong. Beware of buying one unless its in great condition because parts are getting fewer and fewer from Stihl. Its gone past the 10yr parts after day of leaving the product line by 16 years now. Good collector saw but not one to be using day in and day out because it is heavy and parts are getting few.

Adding to Thall - the good news with the parts supply is that there are an increasing number being parted out, so most things can still be found if you're prepared to get used parts (like case parts, etc). There are after-market pistons and cylinders also.

The 041 Super, the last of the series, is a fine saw and sought after around here for milling. Not huge HP, but great torque.
