Well got my muffler cover today(thanks Andy) and fired it up. I had it on the warm start(I think, right above cold-start choke) and it fired up and sounded like it was racing(not good?) and so I blipped it to get it out of warm start onto idle and as soon as I did that it died. Any ideas on what caused this? Carb is set to 1 turn out.

Next question. I pulled the limiter caps with drywall screw since I was going to get new ones(pulled after I tried to start it). I pulled them off and then tried to turn the screw with the limiter cap off and it popped off and I can't get it back on. This is a walbro hd-17. Do you need pictures or anything.

And I didn't replace the intake boot, impulse hose, or fuel hose if that makes a difference to either of those. Thanks.

Evan

I'm not sure what you can't get back on... Is it the limiter caps you can't get back on? If so, don't sweat it for now - leave it off.

Assuming your carb is o.k., You may justs need to adjust things. First, wind in the LA screw a few turns to make sure it can idle high, then turn your L screw say 1 1/4 turns out. Start it, blip the throttle to get it out of H speed start and see if you can keep it idling with the throttle. If you can, play with the L screw until it stay's idlieng, then back off the LA, then the L etc...

If it always dies at "idle", thsn that can be an airleak, but normally it would be hard to start also.

Ok I was going to do that but I can't now that I pulled the limiter caps the screws popped out and I have no idea how those screws are supposed to work or if they're broken. I'll see about a picture.

Hopefully you aren't talking about the JET screws... if so, theare TWO different sizes... so put them back in the right holes to gently seated, and then one turn out.

If you're talking about caps - Screws are hopeless and usually just mangle the caps so you can't use the right tool! I spend half my life getting mangled caps out... You need to make sure the locking tab is lined up with the slot before pulling. So.. IF you are feeling lucky, put a THIN but STRONG screw driver down though the cap, press down firmly and UNSCREW the jets. They will USUALLY jack the limiter cap out or punch the top though it leaving the carcasses for you to pick out...

BTW, how do you know if it's 1 turn out if you have the caps in?

Ok heres a couple pictures.
This first one shows the length of the screw. It's the small head thing. Hopefully you know what I'm talking about.

This second one is the head(slotted head).

The third one is of the carb where you adjust it.

Hopefully you understand what I'm talking about. The limiter tabs came off and then I tried to turn the screws to the left(they were 1 turn out) and they were kind of hard to turn and the head came off. And then for some reason I tried the same thing on the other one. And they wont go back in. Did I somehow shear the heads off? Thanks.

I just assumed it was 1 turn out since I thought the base setting was supposed to be 1 turn out so I turned as far to the left as they would go before I tried to start it and before I pulled the caps.

And I think in the first picture you can see the metal thing that probably wasn't supposed to come out. So did I screw my carb up or something else?

You now need to order new carb jet needles (if you can even do that); it looks like you twisted the slotted heads off. Or just buy a new carb. Maybe someone with a spare HD17 in their junk pile will rob the needles off of them and send them to you for a small fee...

In any case, if you were turning them counterclockwise, there is a larger problem as they should easily turn all the way out into your hands. Perhaps the rubber o-ring that is on them have "glued" the jets to the carb.

That's exactly what I was thinking. But I have no idea how I'm going to get the needles out. I'm thinking the caps were just slipping around the needles instead of turning them. But any suggestions on getting them out?

There's a slight chance you'll be able to get on them with your needle nose and if not, Sears sells some smaller ones that might work. (Take the carb with you and see :) ).

You might see if you can even source some replacement needles in the meantime. If not, you're looking at a new carb. I think you can find them for $30 or so.

I highly doubt needle nose will work. The needle is broken off down in the hole. I might try tweezers or forceps though.

Well I went out and needle nose are too big. I was able to get the o-rings out with a small pocket knife. I think I'll be able to get them out with small forceps or tweezers as long as the needle is able to turn. I can't find any tweezers or forceps at the moment since some people don't like they're personal tweezers to be used on 2 stroke engines:confused:

If it broke off it was strong-armed... and isn't going to come out easily... In my experience with such matters, the carb is now junk..

Sigh... you have had a bunch of bad luck with this saw...

I might have a good rebuilt zama lying around... Brand new carbs are around $90...

Look for them on ePlay including CBs and cheap's places. I've seen used ones for 30 bucks. Good luck and hopefully you don't need to buy one for brand spanking new prices...

I actually didn't turn it to hard. I used more force than I probably should of but it wasn't like I was trying to take the clutch off or something.

And I suppose it's all part of the learning curve.

This carb came from ebay for 20 or something. He said it was in good physical condition but may need cleaning and rebuild so I cleaned it and rebuilt it but I had no idea the needles were gonna shear off.

I think Andy might look for one. But if you want to look too thats ok:D . PM me if you find one. I'm leaving town Sunday afternoon and won't be able to check PM's until Monday night or Tuesday.
