where do I find the best deal on a new piston and jug for a stihl 044 mag?

Depending on the age, ie; if it is an older one, Bailey`s has them for about $99. You can`t beat that anywhere. If Bailey`s is no help you should try Jeff Sikkema at this link.S & S Sawshop

Measure the piston pin diameter before you order. There are 2 sizes.

When did they change the pin diameter and is there anyway on the outside of the machine that you can tell what you have?

The best way is to take it out. At least take off the cylinder and measure the inside diameter in the piston.
