I have an 046 that has lost spark. I had it running a couple months ago and now it appears dead as a doornail. I realize the ignition module is probably bad but I am hoping someone else might have an idea before I drop the cash on a new one. It just seems hard to believe a newer module would go bad. A large amount of saws use the same module (026, 038, and 044) so I thought I would swap one out from another saw. Guess what teh 046 uses s different module. Anyone have any ideas or does anyone have a module for a 046.

Thanks,
Bill

Even though Stihl knows there modules are crap and dropped the lifetime replacement deal, dont they still have like a 3 or five year warranty?

Check things like the ignition ground to the saw and the plug wire first

Hi Bill

If your saw came new with a lifetime warranty on the module it`s still in effect. They haven`t and can`t change that. The "no longer lifetime warranty" started on saws sold after March of this year if I recall correctly.

It might be an idea to remove the coil and clean it, then regap with a business card. Also, check the plug boot and that the plug terminal and connection are good, as well as all associated ignition wiring. Sometimes the plug gap can have a small speck of carbon, etc. causing grounding.

I wish I could warranty the module. I bought the saw used and it has been my experience that the warranty is no good once the saw is sold. This is a bunch of bull, a lifetime warranty should be a lifetime warranty but it isn't. This isn't just a Stihl policy Husky will not honor their warranty either. If a $30,000 truck is sold 10 times the warranty is still good but not on a $600 saw.

Hey Bill- we had a problem with a run of 046 coils going out- The saws would run for about 20-30 minutes but after the case got hot from operating the coils would stop working. New ignition leads and plug terminals didn't help. We ordered new coils from Stihl northwest and that solved the problem. However- we put the "bad" 046 coils on some 066 saws we had with the same polymer flywheel and they worked just fine! I wonder if Casper the friendly ghost was behind that whole deal.

Hi Bill

Maybe you can pick up a used module on eBay or from one of the AS members. I don`t have any to offer but if you are patient I will check with afriend who may.

Probably the larger case on the 066 allowed more air to keep the coils from getting too hot.
