What would an 046 with a decent 20" bar and chain, that needs a cylinder and piston be worth? Otherwise in reasonable shape.... How much would the parts be worth to replace the cylinder and piston be approximately?

How many CC's is an 046?
Is an 046 a strong saw?
Does the 046 respond well to muffler mods etc???

Thanks guys
Matthew

The best way to figure it is to find out what one in the same condition is selling for. Then subtract the cost of parts if you are doing it yourself. If you are having a shop it then the price for installation as well. If you descide you don't want to fix it send a picture to me and I might buy it off of you. I can always use the parts.

The saw in question just sold on ebay, I bid a few times but I got outbid,.... ended up 160$ US or so... a little rich for my blood, considering it needed a piston/cylinder, and who knows what else, plus getting married in a few months doesn't help either!

Yeah, that's probably a good call on letting it go. I've seen operational 046's in pawn shops for like $300. Looked like hell, but ran. I asked kinda the same question on here a while back, asking about an 044 vs. the 440, value-wise, and someone had a good point about how the saw was used prior, determining it's value. If it's a homeowner's saw that got straight gas run through it and ruined the jug and piston, that's a quick fix and a possible deal to be had. If it's a saw that belonged to a pro logger and it got used hard, it may have a top end that's been rebuilt four times and has great compression, but the guts and bearings are probably soon to go. Beyond that, the 046 is a good saw and as mentioned above, parts are readily available.

Good luck on the marriage!

Take care all,
Jeff
