Bought one recently (050). It looks to be in decent shape (no breaks, cracks or missing pieces). Pulled on rewind and it was locked up. Previous owner said it had not been run in 15 years. Took the plug out to put something in it to free it up and oil ran out. Set it up on end to let the oil drain for a couple hours. Poured gas mix in carb. and after 6 or 8 pulls it began to try to run. Finally got it to run on the mix in the carb. (would not pick up gas from tank). Laid down a cloud of blue smoke. Tried the gas in carb. three or four times and still blue smoke. Looked at an IPL and I see that it has a gasket that is common to the oil tank and bottom of motor. I need an opinion on how the oil is getting into the motor. Is it through the common gasket or elsewhere (oil pump). Thanks for any help. Tom

P.S. I did a search and found a lot information, but not what I wanted to know.

The likely leak of bar oil is though the oil pump gasket (ring sleeve)...

On the 050, the oil pump drive is INSIDE the crank case.

I've heard about some o-ring that goes bad in them which lends to leaking bar oil in to the crankcase. It supposedly is a common problem. Andy should be able to give you more information. I haven't work on that model myself so i'm not much help.

050 Stihl question

Thanks for the quick response. I am glad to hear something other than the case gasket. I was not looking forward to splitting the case (maybe not). Thanks again. Tom

i had the same issue with my 051. to fix i needed to replace the oring on the pump shaft and also the rubber ring that seals the pump to the pump bore in the saw.
