i have a 051av and a o31av that run great , BUT won t start unless you prime them ? Ive rebuilt the carbs , replaced or tested fuel lines and filter , both have a pulse signal , and working chokes - TIA for any insight -

I didnt pressure test the crank-case , fairly certain the oem carbs are a-ok -nice video thank you - I have 2 newer 066s and a herd of Huskys , these 2 older ones I dont use very much , but I like the older saws and I want to keep them operational , they do run strong once primed , Ill make some plates and seals to check crankcase for leaks -thanks again I really appreciate the advice -

So you can get them to continue to run after a prime to get them going? Sounds like a new carb kit is in order or your choke isn’t fully closing. Have you got a video of them running? That will help.
they have both been kitted - and gone through twice - they run strong , Idle and cut well - both have working chokes - they will restart after once primed - but not after sitting a while - and they sit a LOT -not too hard to prime -

I have a Stihl 030 that is exactly the same.If you squirt gas down the carb instant start and will start and run like a dream for the whole day but if it sits for a couple days forget it.
I put a working carb complete with air filter and choke from a 031 and the same thing happens.

but I can tell its the weird fuel line set up -connection -hard to fill up that big connection point ?

I will really go over that goofy connection .Thanks for the reminder.I was given the saw it was in pristine original condition with the original bar but the recoil rope was hanging out.I thought that was odd with such a low hour saw but I have seen more recoil rope pulling wreckers than people who do it right short pulls.
I put a new spring in the recoil primed the saw 2 pulls running set the carb cut a bunch of wood saw ran perfect shut it off 1 pull starts.I let the saw sit a couple of weeks pull my arm off 1 shot of prime started ran great till the next time it sat for an extended period of time.Put the carb with air filter and choke from a running 032 and the same story.

i didnt help mine -but the fuel lines can be found still on ebay

I read that you pressure tested the motor. Did you vacuum test it? This shows if you have bad seals. These saws are noted for a crank turning inside the bearing race on the clutch side.
I have NOT pressure and or vacum tested the crankcase - and I may not - they run awesome once primed - if i get real bored I may make some block off plates and pressure -and vacum test crankcase -mayby when snow comes again-

I THINK and HOPE I have found the cause of my 030 being hard to start after sitting.I had to pretty well take most of the saw apart to change the tiny spring on a recoil dog located on the flywheel.I put the air filter with the choke against the carb and held it up to the light and you could see day light between the filter and the carb.I put a straight edge on the filter and you can see how it is bowed .
So I have a couple of thoughts
File the plastic air filter flat
make some type of gasket
Try an Oring
I;m Open for ideas

The carburetor pump diaphragms must be soft and flexible. The flaps for the valves must lay flat against the body.
The reason for the pressure and vacuum test is ANY air coming in past the carburetor is unregulated and will lean the say. The carburetor may pump less fuel also. It is the secret to a successful repair.

On saws that old the rings can loose their spring tension causing lower compression during starting but once running provide plenty of power. A cold compression test after it sits a few days should give the answer if the rings need to be replaced.

The ring are fine the saw doesnt have 50 hours on it.Tonight I file the bow out of the air filter and installed a gasket and changed the spring in the rewind dog.I have a couple of pieces to put on and will test the saw and report back tomorrow night.

Well I think its a winner winner chicken dinner.Filed the air filter plate put in a carb gasket between air filter and carb.Put the carb and asssorted pieces back on and filled her with gas.
5 pulls on choke and the wheels of progress were turning. I hope it was the cure.
