I did quite a bit of searching both here and on the net and could not find any subjects of this nature at all.

I have a 056ave Stihl powerhead and can grab a 056mag2 jug and cylinder for a song and dance. The 054ave has a 52mm piston and a 38mm stroke, while the mag2 has a 56mm piston with the same stroke. Can one swap the jug and clyinder on these two saw? Is there a bolt pattern difference on the crankcase between the two?

Yes, but you must mill the jug holes inwards.

The difference is that the 056AVE crankcase holes are about .065" narrower in the horizontal & are .060" shorter vertically from center to center, so you must mill the cylinder holes on a diagonal & all equally to keep the bore centered.

I say about, as the cylinder bolts' through holes are not very accurately spaced and can vary .015" from each hole pairs. Cut a custom gasket that fits the crankcase, use Hylomar or Dirko sealer on both sides to help seal the smaller cylinder/case lip surfaces that now mate, & also always check your squish afterwards. I'd recommend buying a used factory magnum case if I ever want another S056M2 though, as you always wonder about developing leaks at the jug/cylinder over time.

If nothing else, the jug and piston might be worth something. As far as the holes go, you might be able to slot the jug a bit to allow for this. Watch the fins don't interfere with the bolt installation. Sounds like a good project.
