A great old farmer I know just scored an immaculate 056 that has only seen one chain in its lifetime. its so shiny and pretty! Its been running really well but he says its overheating and dying and then wont start. He says he can smell it getting hot. I havent had the opportunity to have a go with it myself. Hes been using saws for ages and would keep the tension right, and the filter has been well cleaned although when he first got it, it was a mess. I have suggested that he takes the sidecover off to check the fins on the inside.

Any further ideas?

Check the fins but also check for a lean condition. These saws will run just fine with most of the fins broken off. Most of your cooling comes from the mix.

Mike,

I think Timber means scored in the sense that the farmer got a deal on an 056, not that he trashed the piston. He better hope he doesn't, otherwise a used piston is in his future. Still, I think your question stands!
