Hi I am new to the sight and was reading some post on converting a 064 to a 066 .I see where you have done this before and would like to pick your brain ?
The piston and cylinder where toast so I ordered a cylinder kit for a GX066 (54 mm) from HL Supply . I have slotted the cylinder and installed piston and rings along with the oem steel gasket , checked my squish and it is at .041 with oem gasket, I removed cylinder and measured gasket at .022 , measured cylinder depth and compared to old cylinder they are with in .001 +/- of each other , I next measured the two piston for length the new piston is .016 shorter (skirt to top of piston) I than measured top of piston pin to top of piston they are all so with in .001 +/- of each other I also measured gaskets and they are with in the same range .
As I am typing It entered my mind that I never measured squish before disassembly so I don't know what it was , it seems that .041 is a tad much from what I have read on here is .018 to .020 is preferred . I have contemplated milling .020 of cylinder or running with out a gasket but would that not change port timing ? Or is .041 squish just fine for a firewood saw ?
Thanks Jim

Jim,

Aftermarket kits seem to have excessive squish on most models. I have had success with AM (hyway, meteor, tecomec, huztl) despite this and other issues.
The last 064 I rebuilt could not be run without some sort of gasket. Squish was tight with an OEM cylinder and meteor piston. Yes, .020 is preferred but not needed to have a good running large dispacement saw.
Double check your measurements in several spots on the piston.

Thanks This is a HYWay kit and I checked the squish above the piston pin and exhaust . I also made sure the piston rotated 360 deg.
I guess I will be taking some off the cylinder .
Hey Buckthorn I see you are from my old stomping ground I grew up in Prattsburgh .

Prattsburgh, eh? Nice area for sure. My buddy has a deer camp there and always gets a deer.
I have 3+years on a Hyway 036 kit. It's been great so far.
