We have a problem on one of our older (I use that term loosely, it is probably 10-15 years old) 064s. When trying to start it, it has so much compression that it will, literally, rip that handle out of your hand when trying to start it.

Sometimes it will be fine but others, WATCH OUT! One of the younger guys on staff can barely even start it (and he knows how to).

What is the reason behind this? Is there something I should look for?

Thanks in advance. :)

-Matt

P.S. It has done this for years but is REALLY starting to bother me...and my hand! :)

What is the condition of the starter rope? My 066 would bite me fairly often, then I put on an Elastostart handle, and it hasn't bit back yet...3 years and counting. Old rope was binding.

I'm assuming that it's been fine until lately. Otherwise, timing issue if the ignition has been messed with.

The 064 can be NASTY even when working correctly.

There are two different coils and a few different flywheels. It's important to get the correct matched set, and, if the flywheels has two slots, the correct slot. You can't shear a flywheel key...

If everything is correct, and it still wants to bite you, and Elastostart is a must..

I had two early model 064s. They both had a severe recoil. I think the problem was in the timing. Does anyone know if a later model coil with timing retarded starting is avaliable.
You could drill and tap the head and install a decompression valve.

I have a early 064 and it would do that to. When I start that saw cold I put it on the ground and pull it over slowly once and then start it and then it would never jerk, I also installed a elastostart . Recently I had the coil off for cleaning and reset the air gap This may help also, Even with that little down fall I still love that saw It was my first Stihl that I bought over 14 yrs ago.

No matter what you do, add an Elastostart..

Here's the various flywheel and coil combinations.

The later two - Lida EY-V and the Lida Standard (very common on many Stihl saws) work well, but you need to have the -1203 flywheel.

It's the CDIC module in the 064 that was such a bear to deal with. They had a timing circuit and the characteristics of it would change with age and exposure to heat. That's the 1122 400 1303 module (its sister module was the red-light 066 module, the 1122 400 1307). The CDIC module uses the 1122 400 1203 flywheel. One flywheel not shown in the technical bulletin is the 1122 400 1204 flywheel, this was a timing adjusted flywheel which replaced the 1122 400 1203 flywheel for a short time for saws with the 1303 module.

There's also one more 064 module to look out for, the 1122 400 1311. They have a limited lifespan and the highest failure rate (heat failure) of any of Stihl's modules.

One issue with your compression may also be carbon build-up. I've seen combustion chambers in 064s with as much as 1/4" of carbon on the CC and top of the piston.

Time to get rid of it, it's too dangerous!:biggrinbounce2:

I'd be glad to take it off your hands for you.........

Where in Sarnia do you live? I can be there in about an hour............
