Hi.As a 1st timer "newbie" I would like to thank other contributors for information I have already gleaned from this valuable resource.

My 064 (bought new 1990),has had no more than 125 litres of Premix (50:1 stihl) through it, cutting firewood for the family home.Radiata Pine and Eucalypts
is the diet for our woodfire.
Mid last year, after carefully researching the topic here on AS, I did a muffler "mod",with noticeable results. The idle speed increased past the point of spinning the chain. After setting the carby, the saw pulls really strongly, even with the 24" bar buried in Pine.

My real question is...Will I notice any further changes if I change from the 0.040" ,to a 0.020" cylinder gasket?
Cheers, Tony B

Are you sure you have a 40 thou gasket? There are two flavors - 1mm and 0.5mm. It would be rare to find a 1mm gasket. It was mainly for parts of Africa and Eastern Europe where gas was of poor quality and low octane.

To answer your question, yes, using the 0.5mm gasket will make a big difference in you compression, and performance.. use the OEM rubber coated steel gasket.

I'd check the squish though... just to make sure the cylinder wasn't over-decked and then compensated for with a fat gasket..

The logging company I work for was buying around 30-40 064s a year up until late 1990 when they started buying 066s. Funny thing about it is that it seems like quite a few of the half wrap 064s we have from that era have the 1mm base gasket and all of the "western" models (factory wrap, large sprocket cover, dual dawgs) had the thin gasket. Not that it's a bad thing for a landing saw to have lower compression, in fact it greatly increases longevity.
