any one know a price on an 066 stihl. i bought it in summer of 2000. its in good shape, every thing works great.
is there a price guide i can get or look up.

If you're patient and have a bit of common sense, you can watch ebay's prices. I say patient because you'll have to wait a week or so for a few of them to see, so you can compare what you have to what's sold. There's a huge range of quality and price. And I say to have some common sense because while ebay does represent what folks are willing to pay for a like item, it also represents what they're willing to pay when they start fighting over an item, or when they get clouded and go off the deep end.

There's other factors to add in too-is the bar included? How long is it? How much use has it seen? Does it have a full wrap handle? It's in good shape, but how does it look?

You'll see 66's go on ebay for anywhere from $500-$900+ depending on these things, and other intangeables like auction length, presentation time the auction ends and so on.

I'd pay probably $500-$600 for one. Now that's considering that I don't need a 66, and that if I was going to pay more than that ($750+), I'd be approaching the range of a pretty new if not new saw and then I'd just do that.

I've been watching ebay recently and got a well used but 100% solid machine which only needed a chain and sprocket. It was an 064 which is almost identical to your 066. It appeared on ebay with a buy it now price of £250 (about $400). It was only on ebay for half a day before I saw it and bought it instantly (the guy had an excellent feedback score, specializing in power equipment, and I was not worried about getting ripped off). I consider this a very fair (to me) price. Had it been June instead of September, I am convinced this saw would have made more in the auction. As the weather gets worse there will be less punters to fight over your saw. If you can wait till next May ... put it on ebay.

Don't even think about setting a high starting bid as this puts people off. Selling at this time of year, I would put on a reserve price. But if selling in May take a risk and don't use a reserve. This gets the maximum number of people interested and if you are really lucky they will become obsessed and you may even get two thirds of the price of a new saw.

I was looking for a car cd/radio this summer and watched used items selling for £60 plus shipping when I could walk into the local electrical discount store and buy the identical item for £59.99. I even thought of advertizing new units on ebay to see if I could make a profit.

All this might make depressing reading for buyers, but it is not ... I love ebay. I got my 064 for and excellent price and my little top handle was virtually new and I paid half price. The only saw I did not get for ebay was my husky that the insurance company sent me after the old saw was stolen.

As Jeff says ... to buy well on ebay you just need patience. Sell your saw and buy your skis in May. Buy your saw and sell your skis in September.

While your at it, check this one out ... at this time of year this was a fair price for buyer and seller:
