Am looking at two saws. Mainly for cutting at the stump and some felling.
the 395XP or the 066?
Any pros or cons. Am seeking advice.
What are the guys in the woods (logging) using for felling?
All my saws except for a little rear handle echo are Stihls.

Thanks
Frans

The loggers are using both. Choose based upon A. Which has best dealer/service support in your area and B. Which one do you like the best. Both are great saws.

I have an 066G and love it, don't use it as much as I had intended but what can I say except that it cuts like a banshie!!!! I did have it for sale but just couldn't bear the thought of parting with it. I highly recomend the 066, I currently run a 28'' bar with full comp chain in hardwood and it pulls like a 46 w/20'' almost!!! when I wear out the 28'' I'm going to replace it with a 36''.

I've got an 066 which I run with a 36" bar. I've cut white pine with it, red oak, ash, and some other hardwoods and never had a problem with it for power... so long as the chain is sharp. If your chain isn't sharp then it's gonna be lacking for power.

Have a 395 with a 32" full comp. I love it!!! Just took out four large black oaks (28"-40" diameter) Tore through them with no problem. The main factor for me would be the service of the local dealer.

Frans is a comercial tree worker and this is the comercial tree forum. IMO he is asking other tree guys what they would like, not a buncha saw freaks.

We run almost all Stihl and I think it's smart to run all one brand. Because the saws are all built in a similar manner, from one maker, you'll have less trouble fixing them and being familiar with how they run.
Support is very important too, what shops are there more of in your area?
I never ran a 395xp, but I have had good luck with the 066's.

Yes I posted this in this forum cause I wanted to find out what other climbers prefer. (thanks JPS)
We have plenty of chainsaw shops here, both Shihl and Husky.
I think I will stick with the brand I have been using (Stilh) I like the idea of using the same brand of equipment.
I am looking around cause sometimes there is a product model that really shines (sorta like the Toyota Tundra) and It is a good policy to keep options open.

I prefer the balance of a stihl and the translucent (sp?) gas tanks. What an idea! I also agree with staying with one brand, usually many interchangeable parts.

I heard that on the 395 there is a screw on the muffler that goes all the way through to the oil tank. In time this vibrates and you get oil all over everything. In addition, with the wrap around handle you have to fiddle with the bar nut using a different tool.
I also heard it can be hard to start.
this is the type of info. I am seeking
Any other real advice or comments?

395

My only experience is the customer that bought a 395 after having about 3 066.
He had it about 3 months, came in, set it on the bench and said,"I don't care what it costs, I am not going back to the woods with that saw".
1 new 660 later, customer and dealer are happy.

one tank last me about 1,000 bdf (felling, limbing and bucking to 14'6'' in 18''-24'' timber or about 5 trees for my ms460) I get slightly less with my 066 but remeber that the tank is smaller than the tank on the 460:alien:

we just bought a new husky 385 and it is an excellant saw vibs are low due to the anit vibe that husky has. got it from local dealer that set us up with the 385xp with 36" bar and chain for under 800.00 , balieys wasnt even that cheep!! and the service
at this dealer is excellent
ps we are from upstate ny if any one intrested in dealers name drop us a line :p

You made a great choice with the 385XP,I bought one almost a year ago and I love it although I have had it modified even stock I consider it a great saw, although I got mine online it cost me $665 w/32" bar&chain back in August.Great saw though.

Later Rob.
