I was doing some storm damage work the other night and noticed that my old 066's tuning light was flickering at high revs, does this means its reving to high? It doesnt sound like it is? Any ideas? should I wind back the H jet a bit?
 
That's a "Red-Light Special" 066. That LED is connected to a Rev-limiting igniton module. When the red light comes on, you're hitting the limiter and the ignition retards itself back, so you can't rev the saw any higher. You're not doing any damage. Those rev-limiting saws are impossible to blow up, unless you run straight gas. I've seen them run with compromised base gaskets for years. The only bad thing about the set-up, is that after the module ages for a few years, the Max rpms get less and less. They were set at 12,500 when new and I've seen them max out at 10,500 after the saw is a few years old.
 
Red light special? haha thats funny, Thanks alot for the info! any idea what year they were brought out? I got mine off a mate who got crippled in a bucking accident, been trying to figure out how old it is
 
I think they came out in late 1990 or early 1991 and were discontinued in late 1992/early '93. Timber cutters here were buying them and then removing the rev-limiting ignition ( CDIC 1122 400 1307? ) and installing the 0000-400-1300 universal module, which works with the 1122 400 1214 066 flywheel. Stihl quickly figured out that the rev-limiter was a joke. I think the 064 had one too, the CDIC 1122 400 1303.
 
I got one of the old red eyes mine will turn 14,700 rpm stock about 4 to 600 more rpm than any other 066 I come across. I'm always looking for another there a fast runner. they only made them for about 9 months then stopped they don't have a decompression button either
 
those red light specials run like he!!. i have one i save just for competitions. tough to bet. the next generation of 066's had a problem of shearing the flywheel off. the saw would come up to revs and when the chain hit the wood it would slow down. the flywheel would maintain the rpms and shear off and the case. sthil said the crank was too small. after a rebuild the saw lacked rpms. marty

I'm going to fire up my redeye 066 tomorrow and would like a little clarification ontuning the carb. Were you saying adjust it rich so that the light stays on constantly, then lean it out half a turn?

What do you guys think about a red light 066 with a bad lower connecting rod bearing that screwed up the piston and jug.
It'll need a crankshaft, jug set, and gaskets for sure.
Do you replace main bearings at this time?
Is it worth fixing?
If so, should I replace the ignition module, and if I do that do I have to replace the flywheel? Or does it already have the 1122-400-1214-066 flywheel?
Anyone have prices off the top of thier head, or other commnents?

I tend to think it would be nice to fix it because it was so fast.

Jug set alone goes for around $250. I just saw a brand new never used 064 go for $575 on ebay. Have you priced out the parts yet?
 
Mike- there are no aftermarket piston and cylinders available for the 066. Tecomec made a set for the 064 but ceased production on those in 1990. The 044 kits Bailey's is selling are original Stihl OEM parts- they stocked up in the early 90's and ended up with about 1400 extra kits that were made obsolete when the 046 came out- just about every cutter on the west coast now that runs Stihl is using an 046.

Your 066 parts are going to end up costing you over $600 new. Your best bet is to keep an eye on e-bay and look for good, used cranks or jug and piston sets. Husky395 on e-bay is always selling a lot of 066 parts.
