Starter problem i think.I went to start my truck yesterday saturday. The truck was sitting for about 7 days and really had this cold weather here in nj past week.I shot 2 short bursts of starting fluid like i normally do and start. That usually does the trick. This time when i went to start it battery was low and maybe 5 cranks and just stopped.I thought ok i will just throw battery cables on it i have the good ones.Nothing when i start i just here that noise it usually makes light comes on and little alarm.Nothing does not turn the starter.I had the batteries tested at auto zone and are fine.I checked fuses that have to do with ignition and batteries. All good. The guy at auto zone told me could be starter is frozen.Just wanted to get few ideas maybe its another fuse near or above the engine. My next move is to get a starter but i dont want to find out after thats not the problem.I hope i explained my self and any imput is appreciated. When i was cranking it kept the key on till it did not crank or stopped cranking. As i said before was short not even 10 seconds. My wife just reminded me it was only sitting 3 days we had it to the mechanic on wensday to change filter for radiator fluid

Do you hear a clicking noise? Does it have a remote starter solenoid or is the selenoid on the starter? If it has the remote solenoid try jumping the terminals and see if it cranks. You can also try taping the starter with a hammer to see if it frees it up. Im not to familar with the elctrical system on this truck but if its similar to any other truck there should be fuseable links on the heavy wires going to the starter one of those could have burned up.

You might have cracked a ring; always a huge risk when using starting fluid instead of a block heater. :buttkick:

466E's have a habit of cracking rings and getting them stuffed into the combustion chamber.

Right now you dont know if the starter is drawing current but not turning or if there is a break in electrical circuit. A clamp over starter current draw meter is quick if you have one. Sometimes it is handy to put jumpers directly to the starter but you have to be careful not to arc things off or blow up batteries. Watch polarity!

I agree, Frank. If he can get his hands on a clamp-on ammeter, it'd answer a few questions.

BTW, good to hear from you.

Thanks i will check that tomorrow.

I hope that is not the case a cracked ring.I am careful to use 2 quick squirts.I used to park my truck behind my house till some one called town on me that is why i have no choice but to start it with starting fluid when its cold. Thanks for your input.

Gets much colder here, and I've never had to use starting fluid, even on the equipment we don't plug in. Don't you use an additive?

It sat for 3 days first thing i did was 2 quick squits fluid in air filter. Then i could tell the battery was so low or sounded low as it turned about 5 times and stopped. After that i put cables on it and no sound except light comes on and you hear that high pitch noise like normal when you first turn the key.I hope i did not crack a ring like the other guy said. From now on after i get this fixed i will plug it in at my house

I had a truck do that the other day when it was b@lls a$$ cold out. Ended up being the ground from the starter to the block was just a little bit loose. Gave the nut and eighth of a turn and she fired right up. A good way to tell is if the ground wire gets warm while your trying to crank. good luck.

The dt466 is a great motor and should start in the cold without problem. Ours cranks just fine at 15 degrees. You should not need to gas it unless it is really whipped. You need to check your electrical system. Check the connections to the solenoid up on the firewall of the truck. It should have 4 posts that can occasionally go green. Remove wires one set at a time clean and reassemble. Check your positive and negative connections at your batteries. Again remove each set, clean and reassemble. Lastly, remove and clean the positive connections and ground strap. Grounding can be a big problem on these trucks. Clean and reconnect. If that does not clear up the starting issue, you will need to start replacing parts. Good Luck

I just couldnt wait so i removed the starter and replaced it with new starter. That was fun getting it out was harder. That was the problem thank god.Started fast no starting fluid.I have owned the truck since march 2006 and for almost 3 years it was plugged in at my house till zoning officer paid a visit. This is the first winter dont have access to plug it in.Trying to start the truck with the older starter just didnt cut it i had to add 2 quick squirts starting fluid before i started it usually 30 degrees and below. Now i will try to not use it at all.I spoke to international near me that services my truck they could not come to the truck because of insurance so i decided to change the starter.International that serivices my truck told me 2 quick squirts wont hurt it and they have never had ring crack since they have been servicing international trucks.Just wanted to share that info with every one. Thanks for all your help.Im very thankful thats all it was because things are slow and im just making it.Starter was 284 with tax around 303.

Glad to hesar you got off easy.

FYI, a dealer isn't going to admit it, anyways. That said, it's pretty common-knowledge with mechanics up north; right up there with dashboards "freezing", which requires an EEPROM flash. :censored:

Now that she's whirling over at the right speed, you should be able to retire the ether.

Starter fluid on a PC motor is a big NO NO...Your best bet is to cycle the glow plugs 2 or 3 times in below 0 conditions...Glad you got it started...
