Hi, I have been bying parts saws and building up good saws and have a question. Did stihl put two different stock electronic ignition modules on the 031av. I have one that has the little square box the bolts onto one of the coil bolts which is what I am used. and the other one has a bigger plastic piece that bolts right into the bolts that were used for the points behind the flywheel. Is one an earlier model? I would like to know which one is the best to use because I have an extra of both and want to put the best in my saw that I am building up.

The module under the flywheel is the original. Unfortunately, most of them failed. The box on the outside is the replacement from Stihl. Worked OK. I use the aftermarket modules with great success, just remember to reverse the wires due to reverse coil polarity.

Thank goodness for non geniune replacement parts.
Someone has to keep all them there Stihls running besides Stihl.

Do you mean the one you have on the coil? Yes, it is the same idea.
Otherwise, get an aftermarket one.
